CHAPTER 2
KAIROS
"I'm at the cafe right now. Is there anything you'd like?" I asked my friend on the other line.
"Have you eaten anything delicious that you thought of buying for me? Or perhaps you have something you want me to do?" he asked.
It's true that whenever he does something for me, I end up treating him. I'm happy to have him as a friend because Dwight is the kind of friend you can rely on for everything.
"I won't do that anymore," I assured him.
"I'll never believe you," Dwight retorted.
"Come on, what do you want?" I asked.
"Cafe latte, b***h," he replied before ending the call.
For now, I'll take a break and let myself be happy without dwelling on anything else, enjoying a happiness that I won't worry about how long it will last. I want to temporarily remove negativity from my life. It feels like I'm on the edge of a cliff, where a strong gust of wind could easily make me fall.
"Hello, sir. Welcome to our cafe. What can I get for you?" the guy at the counter asked.
"I'll have one cappuccino and one cafe latte," I replied, handing him my card for payment.
"Here you go, sir," he said as he handed back the card. "Please write the names for the cups."
After writing mine and Dwight's names on the cups, I walked over to an available table. Nearby, a girl seemed deeply focused in her book.
"Yep, pretty much. It's about two people who defy all odds to be together. Classic, I know, but sometimes you just need a dose of fairy tale," I heard her say when her friend questioned the book.
Books are indeed a good escape. I used to be like that too, until I realized that I was missing out on the life I had and could have because I was too focused on the world inside a book. I had forgotten about the reality I needed to face.
"Kairos!" I heard the guy at the counter call out, "And Dwight," he added, and I hurriedly went to the counter to pick up my order.
"Thank you, sir. Enjoy!" he said as he handed me the cups.
I stepped outside, but before leaving, I noticed that the cup I was holding wasn't mine—it wasn't the coffee I had ordered for myself.
I quickly returned to the counter, unable to take my eyes off the coffee cup. In my haste, I bumped into someone, and my coffee stained her shirt.
"Oh god, sorry about that," I apologized, noticing that her top looked like a designer piece.
She stared at me for a moment, her expression unreadable. I braced myself for her anger, but she surprised me by saying, "No, it's okay."
"No, it's not. Can you come with me? I'll buy you a dress to change," I insisted.
Her friend interjected, approaching to see what was happening. "What happened?"
"We bumped into each other, but it's fine, really," she assured her friend, then turned back to me. "Don't worry about it, it was just an accident."
"No, even though it's just an accident for you, it's not for me. I feel really bad for staining your shirt," I still insisted.
"It's just a shirt, don't worry about the cost. It's okay," she reassured me.
"Can I get your number then? If you're in a hurry, I'll treat you next time. How about that?" I asked.
"Sure," she agreed, handing me her phone, and I quickly dialed my number.
My phone then rang. "Got it. See you next time," I said with a smile as she made her way out of the coffee shop and I went to the counter.
I'm at the counter, getting another order for Dwight when I feel my phone buzz in my pocket.
"Hello, where are you? Is the line that long? You're taking forever," he asked.
"Dude, this is my second order because I bumped into someone and got her designer clothes stained."
"Wow, it's like bad luck is following you," he said, laughing. "Did she charge you?"
"No, she said it was okay, but I insisted on treating her and she agreed," I replied.
"Rich kid, huh," he said.
"Seems like it, she didn't even get mad, so she must have a lot of money," I said.
"Hurry up, the class is starting," he said then ended the call.
"Here you go, sir. I apologize for the inconvenience," the girl at the counter said. She was the friend of the girl I bumped into.
"Nah, it's okay," I replied.
