Chapter 7: His Queen, His Equal

1077 Words
The following dawn rose silver and pale over the valley, bathing the ancient altar and the sacred pool in a soft, ethereal glow. Birds called lazily in the trees above, and the forest stirred gently, as though it too had witnessed the sacred union of its king and queen. Evangeline blinked awake in Lucian’s arms, the soft moss beneath her and the warmth of his body beside her making her feel cocooned in safety. She shifted slightly, her body aching in the sweetest way. Every inch of her skin tingled with remembrance—the bruises on her hips, the faint sting where his teeth had marked her throat, the warm soreness between her thighs. She wore each mark like a crown. They were proof of the bond they had sealed under the goddess’s gaze. Lucian stirred beside her, his arm tightening around her waist. His fingers traced a lazy circle on her bare shoulder, golden eyes half-lidded but bright in the pale morning light. For a moment, he looked almost at peace, his usual intensity softened. "Did you sleep well, my queen?" he murmured, his voice rough with sleep. She smiled, her head nestling against his chest. "Better than I ever have. But... I dreamed." He shifted, watching her closely. "Of what?" Her brows drew together. "Of Darius. I saw his eyes, burning with hatred. He knows we’re mated now. I felt his rage like fire licking at the edge of my dream." Lucian’s jaw clenched, the muscle there ticking with barely contained fury. "The bond has awakened your senses. You are no longer just human, Evangeline. Our connection is powerful, and Darius... he is attuned to that darkness. If he sought to feel it, he would." She swallowed hard. "So he knows." Lucian sat up slightly, cupping her cheek. "Let him know. Let him come. I will not let him harm you. I will tear him apart with my bare hands if he so much as dares to try." Evangeline shivered, but it wasn’t from fear. It was from the fire in his voice, the absolute certainty in his protection. Still, she said, "I don’t want to live in fear, Lucian. I don’t want to hide." His expression softened. "You are no coward. I saw it from the first moment I laid eyes on you. You have fire, Evangeline—and strength. The goddess would not have chosen you otherwise." "Strength?" she echoed, uncertain. "Yes," he said, pressing her hand over his heart. "You are my mate, my equal. The power of the moon flows through you now. You will learn to wield it, to defend yourself and our bond." Her breath caught. The idea of having power—real power—stirred something deep inside her. She had always felt... different. But now, that difference thrummed in her veins. "Show me," she said, determination lighting her eyes. "Teach me." Lucian grinned, slow and feral. "As you wish." They spent the day in the valley, the sunlight streaming through the trees as Lucian taught her how to move with purpose, how to trust her instincts, how to feel the pull of the bond in her blood. He moved with a predator’s grace, showing her how to balance, how to strike, how to defend. He never mocked her stumbles, only corrected her with patience and pride. "Feel it here," he said, pressing her palm to his chest again. "The pulse of the moon, the strength in your blood. Let it guide you." Evangeline closed her eyes, steadying her breathing. When she opened them, she felt different—more grounded, more certain. She moved again, her body responding with a strange kind of memory, like something ancient waking within her. Lucian watched her closely, his golden gaze darkening with pride and something more primal. "Beautiful," he said hoarsely as she completed a particularly fluid sequence. "You were born for this." She smiled, flushed and breathless, her chest rising and falling. "You make me feel alive. Like I was always meant to be this. To be yours." He grabbed her hand, pulled her against him, his mouth finding hers in a kiss that left them both dizzy. But before passion could fully ignite, Lucian pulled away with a soft growl. "Not here," he whispered. "Not until the final rite is complete. Tonight, beneath the full moon, we will finish what the goddess began." She nodded, her heart pounding with anticipation. "I will be ready." As twilight fell, Lucian led her back to the altar, the clearing bathed in silver moonlight. The air was thick with power, the trees whispering ancient songs as if they too anticipated the union to come. Lucian stripped her slowly, reverently, laying each piece of clothing aside like something sacred. His eyes never left hers. "Tonight, you take me fully," he said, his voice low and rich. "Heart, body, soul." She trembled beneath his gaze. "I am yours." He laid her upon the altar stone, the surface cool beneath her skin. His hands moved over her with reverence and devotion, worshipping her with every touch. When he entered her, it was not just a claiming—it was a ritual, an offering. The mark on her throat pulsed, burning with pleasure and power. Their bond shimmered in the air around them, each gasp and moan drawing it tighter. "Lucian..." she moaned, her fingers digging into his shoulders. "Let go, my queen," he growled, his rhythm deepening. "Show me the strength that lives in you." Her climax hit like lightning, surging through her in waves of silvery heat. Lucian followed with a roar, emptying himself into her with a shudder that left them both gasping. They collapsed together, sweat-slicked and glowing, their limbs tangled beneath the moon. "I love you," she whispered against his chest. His golden eyes gleamed in the darkness. "And I will love you until the stars fall from the sky." But even as they lay wrapped in each other’s arms, a chill crept through the trees. Far away, just beyond the valley, Darius watched from the shadows. His eyes burned with hatred, his mouth twisted in a snarl. He had felt their bond finalize. It had ripped through him like fire, like betrayal. "You may have claimed her, Lucian," he hissed into the night. "But she will be mine. One way or another." Around him, the forest darkened unnaturally, shadows coiling with menace. The war for the queen was only just beginning.
