Chapter 3: Moonlit Defiance

1615 Words
Lucian carried Evangeline deeper into the forest, his powerful arms cradling her as if she weighed nothing at all. She nestled against his chest, the heat of his body a balm against the cool night air. Her mind swirled with the intensity of what had just happened, the raw power of their bond still pulsing in her veins. She had never felt anything like it—the way he had taken her, claimed her, and yet held her as though she was the most precious thing in the world. She could feel his heart pounding beneath her cheek, a steady rhythm that matched her own. But beneath that steady beat was a tension she couldn’t ignore, a flicker of something dark and dangerous. “Lucian,” she whispered, lifting her head to look at him. “What happens now?” His jaw tightened, and he didn’t answer right away. His eyes were fixed ahead, scanning the shadows of the forest as he moved. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and hard. “Now we face the consequences,” he said. “The council will not be pleased.” Evangeline swallowed, her fingers tightening in the fabric of his trousers. “Why? Because I’m human?” “Because you’re mine,” he said, his voice rough. “Because I broke their laws to claim you.” He paused, his golden eyes meeting hers. “Humans are forbidden as mates, Evangeline. The council will see our bond as an abomination. They will demand I cast you aside.” Her heart ached at the thought, but she refused to believe he would do that. “And will you?” A muscle jumped in his jaw. “No,” he said fiercely. “I will never let you go.” She reached up to cup his cheek, her thumb brushing the rough line of his jaw. “Then we’ll fight. Together.” For a moment, something fierce and tender flickered in his eyes. He bent his head to kiss her, soft and lingering, before he finally set her down on her feet. “We have to be careful,” he said, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “The council has eyes everywhere. My Beta, Markus… he will already be suspicious. He’s loyal, but he’s also bound by duty.” As if summoned by those words, a low growl cut through the night air. Evangeline’s head snapped around to see a figure emerge from the trees—a tall, broad-shouldered man with dark hair and piercing blue eyes. His expression was thunderous, his lips curled back in a snarl. “Lucian,” the newcomer said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. “What have you done?” Lucian stepped forward, his body tensing protectively in front of Evangeline. “Stay back, Markus,” he said. “This is not your concern.” “Not my concern?” Markus’s eyes blazed. “You’ve claimed a human as your mate. Do you have any idea what you’ve done? The council will tear you apart for this!” Lucian’s voice was calm, but there was steel beneath it. “I know what I’ve done. And I will face whatever comes.” Markus’s gaze shifted to Evangeline, his expression hard. “You don’t understand what you’re walking into, girl. The council will see you as a threat to our entire way of life.” “She is my mate,” Lucian said, his voice like iron. “Chosen by the moon itself. No council can change that.” Markus let out a low, frustrated sound, running a hand through his hair. “Lucian… I have always stood by you. But this… this is madness.” “Then stand by me now,” Lucian said quietly. “Help me protect her.” For a moment, the two men stared at each other, the air thick with unspoken words. Then Markus let out a long breath, his shoulders slumping slightly. “You know I will,” he said finally. “But you must understand—this will not end here. The council will demand your presence. They will demand her head.” Evangeline shivered at his words, but Lucian reached back, his hand finding hers and squeezing gently. “Then let them come,” Lucian said. “We will be ready.” Markus’s eyes flicked to Evangeline, his expression softening just a fraction. “Stay close to him,” he said quietly. “You are in more danger than you know.” “I will,” she said, her voice steady despite the fear churning in her chest. Markus turned away, disappearing back into the shadows with a final, wary glance. Lucian pulled her close, his lips brushing her temple. “We have to move,” he said. “I have a place—hidden, safe. They won’t find us there.” She nodded, trusting him completely. Together, they moved through the forest, the moonlight guiding their way as Lucian led her to a narrow path that twisted deeper into the trees. The forest seemed to hold its breath around them, every rustle and crack of a branch amplified in the silence. Lucian’s hand was warm and strong in hers, his presence a steady anchor against the chaos of her thoughts. After what felt like hours, they reached a small cabin hidden in a clearing, half-swallowed by the forest. Lucian pushed open the door and led her inside, closing it behind them with a quiet finality. The cabin was simple but warm, the scent of cedar and earth filling the air. A fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting dancing shadows on the walls. Lucian pulled her close, his arms wrapping around her as if he couldn’t bear to let her go. “I’m sorry,” he murmured against her hair. “I wanted to keep you away from this. To keep you safe.” “You did,” she said softly, her fingers tracing the lines of his back. “You claimed me. And I’m not afraid.” He pulled back just enough to look at her, his eyes dark and searching. “You should be,” he said. “Because I will fight to keep you, Evangeline. And I will destroy anyone who tries to take you from me.” She saw the truth of his words in the hard set of his jaw, the fierce light in his eyes. And she knew, in that moment, that she would fight too. For him. For them. “I’m not afraid,” she said again, her voice steady. “I’m yours, Lucian. No matter what comes.” A shudder ran through him, and he kissed her with a hunger that stole her breath. She melted against him, her body already responding to the heat of his touch. He lifted her again, carrying her to the bed in the corner of the room. The furs were soft and warm, and he laid her down gently, his body pressing over hers. For a moment, he just looked at her, his fingers brushing her hair back from her face. “I will never let them take you,” he said, his voice low and rough. “Then show me,” she whispered. “Show me that I’m yours.” He growled low in his throat, his mouth finding hers in a kiss that was both tender and claiming. His hands slid over her body, worshipping every curve, every inch of her skin. She gasped as his mouth found her breast, his teeth grazing her n****e before his tongue soothed the sting. She arched into him, her fingers threading through his hair, pulling him closer. He moved lower, his mouth tracing a path down her belly, his breath hot against her skin. When he finally reached the place where she ached for him most, she cried out, her hips lifting as his tongue swept over her. He growled against her, his hands holding her steady as he tasted her, drank her in as though she was the only thing in the world. She shattered beneath him, her cries filling the cabin as pleasure crashed over her. He rose above her then, his eyes glowing with a fierce, primal light. “Mine,” he growled, his hips driving forward as he sank into her again. She met him stroke for stroke, her body singing with the rightness of it. There was no fear now—only the wild, unstoppable need that bound them together. When they came together, it was with a cry that echoed through the cabin, their bodies trembling as they clung to each other. In that moment, there was no council, no law—only the bond that tied them together, as unbreakable as the moonlight that bathed them. They lay tangled together afterward, their breaths slowing, their hearts still pounding in unison. Lucian pressed a soft kiss to her temple, his fingers stroking her hair. “We will have to be careful,” he said quietly. “The council will come for us, and they will not be merciful.” “Let them,” she said, her voice soft but sure. “I’m not afraid of them. I’m only afraid of losing you.” “You will never lose me,” he said, his arms tightening around her. “I swear it, Evangeline. I will stand between you and the world itself if I must.” She believed him. In the safety of his arms, she let herself drift into sleep, knowing that whatever battles lay ahead, they would face them together. And outside, the moon watched over them, silent and eternal.
