Professor Hamilton was a great scientist and, as such, was one of the few people in the world who could say with almost absolute certainty that life is a real miracle. For this reason, he had always had a profound respect for all his forms of expression, so much so that, as far as he could remember, he had not voluntarily trampled a single ant in all his long existence.
