Toddy resented losing Val’s attention to the telephone.
“Robin, how ghastly!” he heard her say. “Look, I’m coming over…. Darling, you don’t have to entertain me; I’ll just be there. ’Bye.” Valerie turned to Toddy, who, eagerly awaiting her approval, was admiring his new linen jacket in her bedroom mirror. “Toddy, the most horrible thing happened last night!” She checked to see if her seams were straight. “A.J.’s secretary keeled over, right at the dinner table, and died!”
“Really?” He checked the length of his sleeves. “What happened?”
