CHAPTER 13 He had barely stepped out of the shower when his phone rang.“Martin, it’s me,” gasped Lynn. “Oh, Martin, maybe it was all those steps; I don’t know. Howard’s had a heart attack.”*“He’s quite weak at the moment,” the nurse confirmed. “You mustn’t make him talk, and you can’t stay long.” Martin, Lynn, and Alfie were ushered into the intensive care unit where Howard’s pale blue-gray body lay inert, except for a slight flicker of eyelids. Howard opened his eyes slightly, his expression one of bewilderment. So dim was the light, that pinpoint of life still in his eyes; it was as if a sky-sweeping spotlight had been replaced with a half-burnt birthday candle.
