They excitedly chattered away, like exotic birds, exchanging variations on theories, to his barely disguised amusement, though his seemed the only doubts. “I’m sorry,” he began kindly, “I know you’ve invested a lot of time with your research, but, how could a man’s death so many years ago, murder or not, have any bearing on these murders today?” They were stunned. They’d thought it all so obviously connected, but only now realized there was nothing obvious about it, while Alfie played “Devil’s advocate,” showing how police might view their theories. “Now, I’m not saying you’re wrong,” he continued, “but consider how our legal system works.
