What the hell had I just seen? Nate and Cass were seriously…? Oh God, I was going to throw up. I could feel everything from earlier rising in my throat.
“Ashley? What’s wrong?” Lisa asked when I stormed across the room.
I didn’t stop. I didn’t want to talk. I just wanted to leave.
“Baby, it’s not what you think,” Nate said, grabbing my arm. “We didn’t—”
“Are you seriously still lying to her?” Cassie shouted behind him. “She saw us, for f**k’s sake. Just tell her the truth.” Then, noticing everyone staring, she smiled and raised her arms. “That’s right, people! Nate and I have been sleeping together for over three months!”
“Shut up!” Nate snapped, still holding onto me. This was humiliating. I couldn’t believe it. “Baby, look at me. What Cass is saying isn’t true. We just—”
“It’s fine,” I murmured, forcing a smile. “I’ve been cheating on you this whole time too, so now that I know you’ve been unfaithful, I don’t feel that bad.”
“What?” Nate and Cassie said at the same time.
My internal reaction was pretty much the same. What the hell had I just said?
“You heard me.”
“Oh really? And who exactly have you been cheating on Nate with?” Cassie asked.
Oh no. Come on Ashley, think. Just say any name… but which one? I couldn’t pick just anyone and expect the lie to hold up.
It had to be someone who wasn’t here tonight.
Someone Nate hated.
“Easton. Easton Cash.”
The silence that followed felt unnatural. Apparently Easton Cash wasn’t at the party, but judging by everyone’s reactions, he was definitely well known.
“Isn’t Easton Cash the criminal on campus?” someone whispered.
“Didn’t he just get out of jail for assaulting a cop?” another person added.
“Isn’t he the asshole who smashed my car with a baseball bat?” Nate growled beside me.
I swallowed hard.
“Yeah.”
Shit, s**t, s**t. Why out of all the names had I said Easton Cash? That psychopath had destroyed Nate’s car… with me inside it. He was insane.
“Since when?” Nate demanded.
“Do you really want me to tell you?”
I looked at Cassie, who had suddenly gone completely silent.
“Happy now, Cass? You finally got what you wanted. Nate’s yours. I’m giving him to you.”
I was about to leave when I turned back to Nate.
“By the way, sweetheart, the reason I never wanted to sleep with you was because Easton is f*****g amazing in bed. There’s nothing you could do that he hasn’t already done.”
“Ashley…”
“Enjoy the party,” I said with a smile after seeing their expressions.
I walked out as fast as I could, hearing the guests cheering behind me.
I already knew mentioning Easton Cash would bring me a mountain of problems… but there was no turning back now.
♡ ♡ ♡
Being the center of attention was something I was completely used to.
After all, being born into a wealthy family and having two parents recognized by high society made people look at you as if you had blue blood or something. The girls at school constantly talked in the hallways about my perfect relationship with Nate Gray, captain of the Bicentennial Wolves hockey team.
This time, however, things were different.
Ever since Friday night, after the Bicentennial Wolves’ championship party, everyone had been talking about how Nate had cheated on me with my best friend, Cassie Williams. And more importantly, they talked about how I had cheated on Nate Gray with the guy who terrified the entire school; Easton Cash.
I let out a long sigh and practiced my smile one more time. I needed to look calm and natural, as if none of this had affected me at all, but the truth was completely different. I had spent the entire weekend crying over losing the person I thought was the love of my life and losing the friendship of the girl I practically considered a sister. The pain in my chest was real, and it hurt every time I remembered those words, those damned words.
“Nate and I have been f*****g for over three months!”
I bit my lip hard and tried not to cry. I couldn’t fall apart. Not now.
“Is everything alright, Miss Donovan?” I heard Hank’s voice, the man my father paid a small fortune to be my personal driver.
I nodded.
I was so nervous that I still didn’t dare get out of the car I arrived at school in every day. I didn’t even want to imagine the way everyone would look at me once I showed up…
Oh my God, what if Easton had already heard the rumors and denied having any kind of relationship with me? What if I had become the laughingstock of the entire school?
Thousands of insecurities started forming inside my head, but everything stopped when the loud sound of a motorcycle made me jump.
Easton Cash was famous for riding a black Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and I say famous because everyone knew that anyone stupid enough to get too close to that bike was practically dead. There was a rumor that once, a guy tried to be funny by taking a picture sitting on Easton’s motorcycle and accidentally scratched the leather seat with his boots. Nobody ever saw that guy again.
Absolutely nobody.
Although no one really knew if the story was true.
Easton was tall, muscular, and ridiculously attractive. He had the kind of face that was impossible to ignore. Hollow cheeks, a sharp nose, thick brows, hardened features, and piercing blue eyes that always looked slightly irritated, as if the world annoyed him just by existing. There was something dangerous about him, something wild hidden beneath his skin. The kind of intensity that made people instinctively step aside whenever he walked by.
He was also Nate Gray’s biggest rival on the ice.
Easton played for Northridge University’s hockey team, the Ravens, the same team that had lost against the Bicentennial Wolves during Friday’s championship game. Rumor had it that Easton had almost started a fight after the final whistle because one of Nate’s teammates mocked him during the celebration.
It was true that Easton could be terrifying, but that didn’t stop girls from secretly trembling and sighing over him from a distance. He rarely wore his team jacket and usually rolled the sleeves of his white shirt up to his elbows, exposing the strange tattoos covering both of his arms, tattoos people whispered he had gotten while he was locked up in prison.
After parking the bike, he rested it on the stand and took off his black helmet. He ran a hand through his messy brown hair and pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. He placed one between his lips and frowned before lighting it.
Everyone was staring at him, and judging by his attitude, he was completely used to it. Even so, the attention he was getting that morning was even more intense than usual. When he finished smoking, he left the helmet on the motorcycle seat and walked into the building.
“Thanks for the ride, Hank. See you later,” I said before quickly stepping out of the car.
Finding Easton inside the school wasn’t difficult. He was in the main hallway, shoving something into his locker with an irritated expression on his face.
My plan was to walk up to him and explain the entire situation, but then my eyes met Nate’s.
My heart shattered the second I saw who he was with.
Cassie.
That alone was enough to make me lose my mind.
Ignoring every rational thought in my head, I grabbed Easton by the arm and pulled him until he turned to look at me. The moment his blue eyes locked onto mine, I grabbed the collar of his shirt and kissed him aggressively.
The action shocked both him and me.
Were Nate and Cassie together now?
How? Why?
Millions of questions flooded my mind, but everything disappeared the instant I felt a tongue slide into my mouth. My eyes widened in surprise and I immediately tried to pull away, except Easton’s hands slid around my waist and stopped me. An involuntary sigh escaped my throat.
His lips were warm, soft, and demanding.
I placed both hands against his chest with the intention of pushing him away, but instead my fingers curled into the fabric of his uniform shirt.
I had to admit it.
Easton Cash kissed like a professional.
