The lower demon hadn’t cut cleanly. It had ripped. The claw marks burned beneath my skin, but the pain from that was simple. The oath marks were worse. They waited until I was inside my motel room before they truly woke. Jeremy stayed outside the door. I heard him settle against the wall, quiet but alert. Grayson hadn’t trusted me enough to leave me unguarded. That was fair. Trust wasn’t something I had earned. I locked the door because habit was stronger than sense.
