The contract signed

The morning air felt heavier than usual, almost suffocating, as Zara stood by the window of her small room. Her eyes were swollen from a night without sleep. Every time she closed them, she saw her mother lying weak on the hospital bed. Every time she breathed, she felt the weight of Jason’s words pressing against her chest. This is not a request. Those words alone had stolen whatever strength she thought she had left. Her mother was still asleep on the thin mattress beside her. The room was quiet, but Zara felt as if the walls were whispering the deadline repeatedly. She brushed her palm across her mother’s forehead. Cool. Too cool. Evelyn had never looked this fragile, this breakable. Zara lowered her head, whispering softly. “I will fix this Mama. I will do anything.” That was the moment she accepted that she had no real choice. Her heart may have hesitated, but her mind was already locked on one truth. Her mother must live. And so she got dressed. ⸻ When she arrived at Lawson Industries, the building towered above her like a giant ready to swallow her whole. People moved quickly inside the halls, confident and busy, unaffected by the storms destroying someone else’s life. The receptionist recognized her and stiffened slightly. “Miss Zara. The CEO is expecting you.” Expecting her. Those words tightened the knot in her stomach. She followed the silent escort through a hallway that looked too expensive for someone in her cracked shoes. Her reflection on the glass walls looked like an intruder in a palace. Her heart beat violently with each step. When they reached Jason’s office, the escort opened the door quietly. Jason sat behind his enormous desk, posture straight, expression unreadable. He looked calm, collected, powerful. Zara felt small just breathing in the same room. His eyes lifted to her. “You came,” he said, as if he already knew she would. Zara swallowed, her voice barely holding. “I… I have decided.” Jason motioned to the chair opposite him. “Sit.” She sat, her fingers curling into her palms to stop them from shaking. He did not waste time. “You understand the terms fully?” She nodded. “One year contract. I stay in your home, act as your wife, attend events, follow the rules you set. In exchange… you will pay for my mother’s surgery.” “You left something out,” Jason said quietly, studying her. “You are not allowed to leave without my permission. You are not allowed to reveal the contract to anyone. And until the contract ends, you belong here.” The words hit her harder than she expected, but she forced herself not to cry. Not yet. Jason slid the document across the table. “If you are ready, sign.” Her hand trembled as she picked up the pen. Every part of her body screamed at her to stop. Every part of her soul begged her not to ruin her life like this. But this was survival. For her mother’s life, she silenced her fear. The moment her signature touched the last line of the document, Jason reached forward, turned the page around, and signed his name with calm confidence. The contract was complete. Zara exhaled shakily. It was done. There was no turning back. Jason closed the file neatly. “Your mother’s surgery will be paid for today. A private room will be arranged. You may stay with her until she is stable.” Zara’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you,” she whispered. Sincere. Broken. Grateful. “You do not know what this means to me.” Jason looked at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. “I am not doing this for gratitude,” he replied quietly. “Do not forget that.” Zara lowered her head. “I understand.” ⸻ When she walked out of the building, she felt a strange mix of relief and dread fighting inside her. Her mother would live. That was all that mattered. But she had just tied herself to a man she barely knew. A man who frightened her in ways she could not explain. She did not have space to process those emotions. Not today. She rushed to the hospital immediately. The moment she arrived at her mother’s ward, a nurse approached her. “Your mother has been moved to a private room. The bills have been cleared.” Zara froze. Jason truly moved fast. She walked into the new room slowly. A soft bed. A clean space. Machines humming quietly. Her mother sleeping peacefully. Her knees almost buckled from the overwhelming relief. She sank to the chair and held her mother’s hand tightly. “You will be fine Mama,” she whispered. “Everything will be fine.” But deep down, she wondered if she was lying to herself. ⸻ Meanwhile, in another part of the city, Bianca stood before a mirror adjusting her diamond earrings. She had been raised to believe she was destined to be Jason Lawson’s wife. Their families were close. She had status, education, wealth, beauty, everything. She smiled at her reflection. Her future was secure. Until she received a message from Jason’s mother. “Come to the house tomorrow morning. It is urgent.” Bianca frowned. Urgent? Jason’s family rarely used such words. She had no idea that a girl she had never met had just taken the position she believed belonged to her. ⸻ At that same time, far across town, a man leaned against the wall outside a small café. He had sharp eyes, a tense jaw, and impatience running through his veins. Adrian. Zara’s ex. He had been trying to reach her for months. She had cut him off completely after the way their relationship ended, but Adrian was not someone who gave up easily. He scrolled through his phone again, irritation rising. No messages. No calls. Nothing. “Zara, where are you?” he muttered. Then he saw her name trending locally because of an unusual hospital payment linked to a VIP benefactor. His eyes narrowed. “What have you gotten yourself into?” Obsession flickered in his expression. If she thought she had escaped him, she was wrong. Adrian would always find her. ⸻ Back in the hospital, Zara finally closed her eyes beside her mother’s bed. She did not know Bianca was preparing for war. She did not know Adrian had found a new reason to look for her. She did not know Jason’s parents would react badly. She did not know her quiet life was already over. She thought she had made a sacrifice for love. But she had just stepped into a storm. Her new life had already begun. And nothing would ever be simple again.
