In the morning, Aurora smiled at her parents. She took a bath, cleaned her teeth, selected garments, and threw on a dash of perfume. And this she did, and then she hugged her mummy and Daddy, and away she went. This was a hectic day. She had given Zayn and herself the chance of a new thing.
As she got to Riverstone High, the gate greeted her with her friends, Anna, Precious, and Victoria. They used to welcome her with big smiles. However, Zayn attracted her attention. He was standing on the road, and his presence attracted her. There was a feeling of apprehensiveness (but it was, she thought, rather that of awe than of nervousness), followed by surprise and curiosity, which made her feel quite strange. She made herself act like she felt nothing, but she did.
Zayn strode across to them, his swagger slightly tempered. He bowed to the three girls and stopped short at Aurora. That is bad of me to have not sent those gifts to you myself, he said gravely.
Aurora was lighthearted. She had apologised, and she wished to be friends. It is all right, she replied with a real smile on her lips. Isn't it something like we are friends now?
Yes, we are, Zayn assented, shiningly.
Then he asked, "Would he be allowed to take her to the field when the school closed?" so that we can talk properly, he said.
Aurora glanced round at him, in a warning mood. It is not without my friends, said she, speaking decisively. I did not rely on you.
Zayn responded to her immediately. Aye, ‘agreed, he said.
Precious pushed Anna. There was a playful glint in her eye. Thought of it a minute, she said to herself, aloud enough to be heard by all, I suppose he is no longer putting on earrings. Nor sagging. Unbuttoning not his shirt either.”
Anna smiled, and Victoria smiled. Is it possible due to Aurora? Anna teased.
The girls laughed so, and Aurora could not avoid feeling amused at them. They went into the assembly hall, and the morning must already have had a change.
Aurora was also able to notice that Zayn was staring at her during lectures. She looked around. Yes, he was looking, a vague, inscrutable expression on his face. Aurora was experiencing a blush come up on her face.
What is the reason why he is staring at me like things have gone this far? Aurora spoke low to Anna, sitting beside her.
Just a smile came to Anna, with a meaning in her eyes, but no answer.
As the last lesson came to its end, Zayn approached Aurora right under her eyes. Is it possible we can go just now to the school field and have that conversation? he said that, calmly. This time, Aurora didn't refuse him.
They were going along together. Zayn talked to all four girls without any hesitation and told various kinds of stories. People were all smiling when he was funny and charismatic. He appeared to fit in totally with the friends of Aurora, another surprise.
They came to the extensive school field. It was the first time Aurora had ever been in the field, and she sighed, looking round at the vast expanse.
She turned on her three friends, on whom she had looked, but they gave each other guilty glances. We are dreadfully sorry, Aurora, said Precious. The day we planned the tour, we did not take you on the field."
Aurora assured them, "It is all right."
Where was she to sit?. Said Anna. Is it possible to have a seat where we can talk properly?
Oh, don't worry, Aurora answered.
Under a big tree, they found a quiet spot. When Aurora sat down, her friends infrastructurally moved near her and sat in a protective group. But Zayn gazed into them with the suggestion of polite request in his face. "May I say move a little?" he said kindly. It is a personal talk.
Anna, Precious, and Victoria nod, move a little distance, to be still within the view, but out of hearing. Her heart beat a little quicker, a curious admixture of nerves and new confidence, that her friends were not far away. She made a deep sigh. "What is the reason that you summoned me to this talk?" Looking at Zayn, she asked him a question.
Zayn did not look arrogant with his dark eyes as they now locked on hers, making her goose all pimply. I am asking it, so that we may know one another better, and he spoke in a warm tone of voice. "As friends."
Aurora asked, "I am listening."
"Why are you bitter toward men, Aurora? Why don't you make friends with men?"
Aurora signed. And here in Riverstone High School, "I have to watch who I am talking to and who I should be meeting with, she clarified. It is not the kind of school that I like in my other school, where students dress well and there are no earrings, no sagging. Nigh every one of these men here is engaged in such."
Zayn heard it without saying anything. Hmm, mumbled he. But your old school, which school is that?
Aurora said, "Paul Saint High," with an example of former pride.
Zayn stared in actual dismay. Paul Saint High School? he chanted slowly. "Your dad must be a rich man."
Aurora went round, with her back towards the field, a shade on her face. He was....., said she, her voice soft, and with a touch of sadness. However, he lost his job, as a result of which he was unable to cover my education as before. I need to cross here to Riverstone High School and show my parents that I care. To them, I made a promise."
Zayn answered her in a milder tone and with a loving sense in his statement. He said, his voice almost a whisper, "My Daddy was a rich man, too. I was doing very well, and he gave his life at an early age." There was luster in his eyes as he spoke, an attempt at armor to the open wound of the pain. One tear moved down his face.
It hurt Aurora in the chest. All her prejudices towards him cleared. He was a bad boy, but moreover, he was a boy who had lost. Instinctively, she stepped nearer, touched. She put her hand into his and put it to hers. Then, with a soft coaxing, she drew his head down to her breast.
I suppose it will be all right. You will be all right, she said, stroking his hair. Her own eyes were floodgates. She took a sleeve of her school dress and wiped the tears from his face. Why did you decide to be sagging and do all that shenanigans, Zayn? she asked, and her voice was light.
Zayn fell into her arms and was soothed. My father has no other son, he responded in a thick emotional tone of voice. Sometimes when there are no school hours, I go to sell some drinks. Once I am through with lectures, I spend the money to save towards my studies as well as to save towards my mother.” He did not refer us to the aspect of walking around with dangerous gangs, which was the aspect in which he used to move around after school. He was talking about struggles right around the corner.
Aurora stood listening, and her heart yearned after him. She knew what sacrifice was. She looked at him, then pulled back a little, but still held his hand. To her, she said, "I am afraid to get into a relationship, Zayn. I do not want to lose my parents' expectations. I told them I will do what makes them proud, and I never want to disappoint my words.”
Looking at her, Zayn was serious. And you are not going to fail them, Aurora, he said, speaking very decidedly. I will make you a promise that you will not have regrets about dating me.
Gently, Aurora shook her head. No, it is not the promise, she told him, but she would consider it.
Then she put to him the questions which had been festering in her mind. You were about the same age, Zayn. Why were you interested in me? How come you had the money to present me all those gifts and presents, yet you were not raised by a father who supported you heavily?”
Zayn was staring in her eyes, and on her inquiry as to his age, he replied, I am eighteen years of age. He informed her that he had spotted her on the first day they met, as well as the fact that he had bought the gifts and money from small economic businesses in the area. He had used that money to buy food, flowers, dark chocolate, and many other things.
Aurora started with amazement. “For real? Money that you are supposed to use to pay attention to or support your mother or your siblings? No, that is not right, Zayn," said she.
Zayn answered, I wanted to demonstrate that I care, cherish, and love you so much.
Aurora gazed at him, and there was a weird fluttering in her heart. The sincerity of him, his weakness, and his giving up came too much. I will look at your request, dear, she whispered most innocently, the dear slipping unpremeditatedly out of her lips.
At this moment, Precious and Anna, and Victoria came up to them. Precious said, It is getting dark. Well, then, let us begin to go home.
Aurora nodded absent-mindedly and bade Zayn goodbye. Zayn also bid goodbye to the girls and walked off.
Precious nudged Aurora and said in a low voice, Any feedback on anything said? Aurora replied, with a good deal of gist, girls! She said she would tell them the next day so that nobody would know.
They walked for some time and got separated at the crossroads. When Aurora came home, she found her Daddy and Mummy in the parlor. She welcomed them and discussed her day at school, giving out the names of her classes and her friends. She made sure not to show that she had talked long with Zayn. Having talked to her parents, she ran to her room and replayed everything that Zayn said, looked at, or even touched.
