In Aurora, the sun shone into her bedroom one morning on Friday. Nevertheless, there was a burden on her shoulders. It was a difficult decision and a way to take. Even at breakfast, she made herself a big smile not to make her mummy and Daddy anxious. She did not feel like getting anything going. She took a shower and brushed her teeth, wore her school outfit, and sprayed a drop of the perfume that she liked the most. She went out of the house with a sudden goodbye hug. Her normal step was lacking.
This was weird walking to school. It would be normal to have a conversation with Anna, Precious, or Victoria, or even receive a wave from Zayn. The street today was friendless. At that moment, she was walking as if nobody accompanied her but her thoughts; she was repeating again and again all the words of the emotional conversation with Zayn that she had had yesterday. She reached the school gate. She was anxious and confident.
At the end of the assembly, Aurora walked into her classroom smiling cheerily. Her friends were already out and were crowding her. You said you would tell us about your and Zayn's discussion yesterday! With a wide look, Anna asked.
Aurora laughed and owning she had. The three girls stood close together around her desk, with their eyes full of excitement. Aurora started to speak in a low voice, telling me about his father. He has lost him at an early age, and he has been financing his academic work himself. She proceeded then to indicate that Zayn did the payment of the chocolates, food, jewelry, and the teddy bear by selling drinks after school in order to earn some cash to take care of himself and his mother.
Anna, Precious, and Victoria listened, and their initial excitement turned into sympathy. Oh my goodness, Precious mumbled, having a worried look in her eyes. That is so pathetic.
"He goes ahead and does all that?" Surprise was in the voice of Anna as she asked.
Aurora nodded with a new respect for Zayn on her face. “Yes. And he spends the money on his studies as well as assisting his mother in preparing meals at home.”
The girls shared an understanding that softened the earlier judgment of Zayn. What about your plans for a relationship with him? Victoria at length inquired in a kind tone.
With a breath, Aurora took. I explained to him that I will think and consider his proposal that I become his girlfriend, and she said sharing the secret.
“Awesome!” said Anna, excited again.
But Aurora replied, holding up her hand. She was in agitation. I will accept him, but I must have an agreement with him first before I accept him in the last sense.
“What agreement?” All the girls spoke in tones.
Mysteriously, Aurora curved her lips, but at that moment, the classroom door opened. In walked their teacher, Mr. James, the biology teacher, followed by another teacher. The girls rushed into their seats, and their interrogatives floated in the air.
The lesson started with Mr.James addressing the complexity of the reproductive system. Aurora was doing her best to concentrate on the lecture, but her mind kept spinning due to thoughts about Zayn. As the lesson was finishing, Mr. James assigned them a task in the form of a classwork. Aurora thought fast and put her mind to work.
A buzz passed throughout the room when the results were reviewed. The score by Zayn was the highest. This turned Aurora around and made her turn her head to Anna, who sat beside her. Was he so eminently brilliant as that? she murmured, actually shocked at the idea.
Anna grinned. He is not just brilliant, Aurora. He is a genius in everything. They claim he does not talk in the classroom, and he still scores everything.”
The news truly wowed Aurora. A genius? This boy, with the tattoos and the former earring, who sold drinks after school and had known such pain? She felt a surge of pleasure that he had scored the highest mark. It was another layer to the mystery that was Zayn Hunter.
Meanwhile, as Mr. James was about to leave the class, a young girl approached the doorway, asking for permission to enter with polite respect. Aurora watched, curious. The girl had a familiar quality about her, something in her eyes. It turned out to be Peace Hunter, Zayn's sister.
"Peace?" Aurora murmured to herself, then quickly realized. Zayn's girlfriend? A pang of confusion hit her. No, Precious said it was his sister.
Just then, Precious stood up to meet Peace at the door. "Do not act rough here," Precious whispered, ushering Peace in. "That is Zayn's sister. She is in Junior Secondary School."
Aurora's eyes widened. Zayn had a sister? And she was here, at Riverstone High, in junior secondary? The fact that Zayn had not told her anything about Peace bothered her. Did he want to keep things from me? She looked away, a new question forming in her mind.
Aurora was interrupted from her thoughts by the bell that jingled and gave an indication of break time. She and her buddies went to the cafeteria in order to purchase food and drinks, and other stuff. As they walked, they saw a familiar person go by. Zayn.
Hi, Beautiful," Zayn replied with a smile at the corner of his eye. How are you doing?
That is not fine, Aurora said, and there was a little of her annoyance about Peace in her voice. She passed him on the way to choose a seat both of them could use, and she wanted to talk freely so that her friends would not hear her. After sitting down, she gazed at him full in the face. Zayn, why did you not tell me you have a junior sister? You would not want to hide anything from me?
With calm understanding, Zayn looked into her eyes. It is only the beginning of our acquaintance, Aurora, he explained. That is something that I had intended to do when we began dating.
Aurora analysed his words. His reasoning was right. He was correct; they were merely starting to develop the awareness of a more in-depth relationship. Well, all right about that, she said, relief making itself felt. But I have a deal to strike with you if I get an opportunity to get into a relationship with you. There is no such thing as s****l intercourse between the two of us."
Zayn started with widened eyes. He paused and reflected on the words she said, the seriousness of her condition. Then slowly, he nodded. I accept what you ask, Aurora, in a strong, confident voice, leaving no doubt about it.
Aurora received an inner contentment. She cared about this. She turned to him and said, Thanks very much for accepting that. I will call you later with my decision concerning whether I should date you or not.
When she was going back to Precious, Anna, and Victoria, one of her friends told her, I saw you with Zayn. What happened?”
With a secret smile, Aurora returned. Nothing did, you know, she said, and humoured them with curiouser faces. She understood that a good secret was kept so that it might be unveiled later.
The bell was jingling soon, and they returned to their respective classes. On arrival, they met Principal Mrs. Okoro Jackson standing in front with a group of teachers. She wore her serious face, on which she wore an important announcement.
Principal Okoro Jackson started by saying in a loud voice: "Good afternoon, class. The Governor of the state has put up a scholarship that is going to be taken up in Riverstone High School. A general stir ran mingled among the students. Each of you will have to enter this scholarship program. But we are selecting three only out of this class as examples.”
Aurora was cured of heart leaping. An opportunity! With this, she could achieve exactly what her mother and father were expecting her to.
To begin with, the Principal went on to say that there will be a test among a lot of you in this class."Those who will take the places with the highest scores will represent the school in this scholarship session. Moreover, the findings will be announced by the closing of today, hence get ready.”
Aurora was able to snatch her textbooks hurriedly, and her mind ran over formulas and terms she needed to know in lit. It was an opportunity that she had. Starting to read, she revised her notes, and she was intent on doing her best. The classroom was teeming with apprehensive, audible excitement.
Later, the Principal, Okoro Jackson, came along with some external invigilators who would oversee the upcoming test. The Principal said to the students: "Do not cheat." Concentrate on the check-up. And then she told them goodbye, good luck at the scholarship examination, and her eyes ran over their tense faces.
Examination was started. Questions were not easy for Aurora, but her brilliant mind never gave up. In English Language and Mathematics, she carefully filled in all the answers with her pen flying on the paper. They got 2 subjects with one hour at their disposal. At the expiry of the time on the two papers, the exam invigilators picked up the answer books. The Principal spoke to them once more, informing them to wait until they got their results. There was a clamor of excited remarks and surmise in the classroom.
Two hours later, the Principal came back with a load of papers. The results. Silence came to the classroom.
Trying is the thing: I know you all did your best, said Principal Okoro with a little smile on her lips. However, the individuals with the best scores in the exams are..." She hesitated and was creating suspense. "...Zayn, Aurora, and Victoria!"
A shock and elation hovers over Aurora. She had passed! And Zayn! And Victoria! The principal, Okoro, congratulated them with pride in her voice. Prepare Code examination, the Scholarship. In case you take up the scholarship exam in another school, the government will provide you with a five-million cash prize!
Five million! Aurora was in confusion. This is going to transform her family.
She gazed at Zayn, still surprised that he had passed, but people knew him so well. And then he was brilliant, really brilliant. And overwhelmed with joy, Aurora ran to him and embraced him. Good girl, congratulations, mumbled he, then she leaned over and kissed him, a frenzied smack of her lips against his, forgetting where they were, forgetting everything but the joy of the instant. The hug became reciprocated as Zayn engulfed her with his arms, kissed her back in the same fashion, managing to be out of the direct eye line of the Principal, however.
Precious, meanwhile, watched with a gnawing of jealousy inside her stomach. Zayn had passed away, as well as Aurora and Victoria. The grin on her face was strained, and she experienced an urge of envy.
Zayn was all flushed as Aurora turned Zayn away. This is where I belong, her voice said, and all her uncertainty previously was melted in the light of their success together. "I accept you as my boyfriend, Zayn."
This evening, she would get home and report to her mother and her dad the good news about the scholarship chance and gear up for the most significant study experience in her life. An obstacle she would have now, and unbelievably, have Zayn by her side not only as a friend but as her boyfriend. Short-listed as a potential winner, the five million cash prize was hanging in there like a prisming beacon of hope and a better future.
