There was a multitude of emotions behind Ella’s eyes in those last few moments before the searing blue fire engulfed her as she fell in my arms. I couldn’t sift through them fast enough to decipher each one, but my soul knew what she was trying to communicate with me.
Silence rang in my ears at her quickly paling, limp body in my arms. I lifted a shaking hand to shake her shoulder.
“Love?” I breathed, panic growing within me and causing my voice to tremble. “Ella, dear?”
I idly register Xaero dropping to his knees beside me. His own hand shook as he reached out to touch Ella’s neck. I held my breath just as his own breathing went silent. Then a shaky breath ripped from his chest.
“No,” he growled. “No, no no no. This isn’t right! You promised me—”
