The days flew by way too fast for Rosie, but for her stepmother, they couldn't move quickly enough. Every time Rosie's dad walked into the room, her stepmother would put on the biggest, fakest smile, acting like the most loving parent in the world. Her dad truly believed it, feeling completely relieved that his new family was getting along so well.
Finally, the day arrived. Rosie’s dad stood by the front door with his packed suitcases, giving Rosie a tight hug.
"Take care of yourself, sweetie," he said, kissing the top of her head. "Listen to your stepmother. I’ll be back in a month."
Rosie wanted to scream, to beg him not to leave, but she just nodded quietly as the tears pooled in her eyes. Her stepmother stood right behind her, placing a hand on Rosie’s shoulder in what looked like a comforting gesture to her dad. But the grip was so tight it made Rosie wince.
As soon as her dad’s car pulled out of the driveway and disappeared down the street, the fake smile instantly dropped from her stepmother's face. She shoved Rosie aside and turned to Emily, who was already smirking.
"Well, well, well," the stepmother said, her voice turning cold and sharp. "The king is gone, Rosie. Which means you no longer run this house."
She pointed a harsh finger toward the kitchen. "Starting right now, you are going to earn your keep. I want this entire house spotless by dinner, and if it's not, you can forget about eating tonight. Emily and I are going shopping."
With a cruel laugh, the two of them walked out the door, leaving Rosie completely alone in the massive, quiet house, realizing her nightmare had officially begun.
