The next morning, Rosie woke up early, her stomach aching with hunger. She quietly crept down the stairs, hoping to grab a small piece of bread before anyone else woke up. But as she entered the kitchen, she found her stepmother already sitting at the table, sipping coffee, while Emily was eating a massive plate of pancakes and bacon.
"Look who finally decided to join us," Emily mocked, stuffing a piece of bacon into her mouth. "Are you here to clean up after me again?"
The stepmother didn't even look up from her phone. "There is a pile of laundry in Emily's room, Rosie. Wash everything, iron it, and put it away neatly. And don't think about touching any food until it's done."
Rosie swallowed her tears and nodded. She walked up to Emily’s room, which looked like a tornado had hit it. Clothes, makeup, and trash were scattered everywhere. It took Rosie hours to gather all the laundry, carry it down to the washing machine, and then iron every single piece perfectly.
When she finally finished and brought them neatly folded back up to Emily’s room, she found Emily sitting on her bed, waiting for her.
"Put them in the closet," Emily ordered, pointing at the wardrobe.
As Rosie walked past, Emily intentionally stuck her foot out. Rosie tripped, losing her balance, and the beautifully folded clothes went flying everywhere, landing in a messy heap on the floor.
"Oh, oops," Emily said, laughing loudly. "You are so clumsy, Rosie! Look at this mess you just made. Now you have to do it all over again."
Rosie stared at the scattered clothes, her hands trembling with anger and exhaustion. She realized then that no matter how hard she worked or how perfect she tried to be, her stepmother and Emily would always find a way to make her suffer.
