Sophia Rivers stood outside the principal's office and knocked politely on the door.
"Come in," a warm voice replied from inside.
Sophia opened the door and saw a middle-aged woman sitting at the desk, carefully reviewing some documents. She appeared serious and focused, not distracted by Sophia’s entrance.
“Hello, I’m Sophia Rivers, the new student,” she introduced herself.
The middle-aged woman slowly looked up, and as soon as she saw Sophia, a gentle smile appeared on her face. “Ah, you’re the talented transfer student, Sophia Rivers?”
“Yes, thank you for your kind words,” Sophia replied.
The woman stood up from her chair, excitement evident in her voice. "You’re too modest, Sophia! I’m the school director, Wei Xifeng. You can call me Ms. Wei."
“Hello, Ms. Wei,” Sophia said sweetly.
"Ah, I love students who are diligent and eager to learn! Even though your family might not have much, you have ambition and determination. If you work hard here, don’t feel inferior. I believe you can carve out your own future. The school needs students like you, and society needs talents like you too," Ms. Wei said encouragingly.
"Ms. Wei, you flatter me," Sophia replied, feeling a bit uncomfortable. This background was arranged by Alexander, not something I truly earned, she thought to herself.
“Please take a seat. I’ll get your documents, and I’ll call your homeroom teacher over as well,” Ms. Wei said before turning to gather the paperwork and make a call.
Soon, there was a knock on the door, and in walked a flamboyantly dressed woman who looked like she had wandered into the wrong place. She walked up to Ms. Wei and asked with a tone that seemed to carry a hint of flattery, "Ms. Wei, did you need me for something?"
"Ah, Ms. Zhang, this is the new transfer student, Sophia Rivers. She’s been assigned to your class. Please take her to the classroom. Here’s her file," Ms. Wei said, handing her a document.
"Of course, Ms. Wei. Is there anything else you need from me?" Ms. Zhang asked, her voice dripping with sycophancy.
"No, that’s all. Sophia, please go with your homeroom teacher to the classroom. I have a meeting to attend. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to come to me," Ms. Wei said before leaving with her documents.
Once Ms. Wei had left, Ms. Zhang immediately sat down at the desk, giving no attention to Sophia at all. Her expression shifted instantly, revealing a side of her that was almost shocking.
Sophia noticed that Ms. Zhang wasn’t in any hurry to take her to the classroom, so she spoke up, "Teacher, I’m Sophia Rivers, the new student."
"I know," Ms. Zhang replied dismissively, not even looking up. "Don’t think that just because Ms. Wei likes you, you can do whatever you want."
Sophia, feeling a little confused, responded innocently, "I didn’t think that."
"Humph, just a poor girl. You think because you’re somewhat good-looking you can climb the social ladder? Those young masters won’t like you. You’re not even worthy of being their plaything. You’d better behave and stop trying to play games behind people’s backs," Ms. Zhang sneered.
Sophia felt a bit dizzy at her words. Am I overthinking this? Should I ask her, "I'm not here to chase boys, I’m here to study?" she wondered.
She soon realized that Ms. Zhang was nothing but a snobbish opportunist, and there was nothing she could do but endure the scolding, as it was no different from the buzzing of a fly.
Finally, after Sophia stayed silent, Ms. Zhang took it as a sign of weakness and smugly thought, She’s just a poor child, easily intimidated.
“You, follow me,” Ms. Zhang said, walking towards the door without looking back.
Sophia couldn’t fathom why someone so opportunistic would be assigned to teach a top class. Could it be because of connections? she wondered. Indeed, she was right. Ms. Zhang was having an affair with a small shareholder of the school, and it was this relationship that had allowed her to rise in prominence.
Joke:
At a boys' dormitory, a late-night discussion continued until 3 AM. They suddenly decided to debate, "What’s the first thing to say when you meet a beautiful girl?"
One of the boys, still half-asleep, groggily answered, "Forget about saying anything, let’s just go to sleep."
