After parting ways with my best friend, I received a probing phone call from Max, his voice laced with sinister intentions. "Honey, I just found your diagnostic report in my briefcase. Have you seen it?"
The night wind blew against my face as I replied nonchalantly, "I was in a hurry after getting home last night and went straight to prepare dinner. I don't remember where I put it after that and haven't had time to look."
His tone immediately became more relaxed. "Honey, it's nothing serious. It's just a simple stomach problem. I'll ask my secretary to buy you some stomach medicine and bring it back."
"I'll be home as early as possible tonight. You go to bed early."
After hanging up the phone, I burst into laughter on the street. A gust of wind hit my face, and unexpectedly, the tears I'd been holding back started to fall.
After four years of university, five years of marriage, and nine years of knowing each other, my sincerity had been completely wasted on him. A man with such a heartless and ungrateful nature wasn't worthy of my tears.
Early the next morning, I changed out of my usual home clothes and into a beautiful suit. I even put on some lipstick. When I appeared in front of Max, he was taken aback. "Honey, are you going out today?"
I acted all intimate and took his arm. "Honey, it's been a long time since I've been to the company. I don't even know who you've hired recently."
"Didn't you say you hired a new female assistant? I want to see if she's competent."
A flicker of panic flashed across Max's face, and his body stiffened. "Honey, why the sudden interest?"
"Krista is just a newbie. My main tasks are still handled by Erick. You know, he's a man."
I pretended to be angry and withdrew my hand. "What? I'm your wife. Can't I go to the company and have a look?"
With that, I pretended to be uncomfortable and rubbed my stomach.
Max came over and helped me up with a fake look of concern. "Honey, you must have a stomachache. I bought you some stomach medicine. Take some now."
"Honey, don't be angry. You can come to the company anytime."
I looked at Max coldly as he went to get my stomach medicine. He was just hoping that I would die soon, betting that I wouldn't be able to make a fuss anymore. Then, with all the family assets in his hands, he could marry his beautiful mistress. However, I was going to crush his plans one by one.
In the end, I still held Max's arm and appeared at the company. Only a few longtime employees recognized me and greeted me with a smile. "Mrs. Cornwell, it's been a long time!"
I deliberately called over a familiar face. "I'm treating everyone to afternoon tea today. Put it on the boss's tab."
As Max and I reached the office door, a clumsy girl almost bumped into us. The girl was about to greet him sweetly, "Mr. Cornwell..." but was met with a stern reprimand.
"Krista, you've been with the company for a while now. Why are you still so clumsy? You almost bumped into my wife."
Krista looked up in panic. "Mrs. Cornwell, I'm sorry. I'll be more careful next time."
Max was afraid that I would notice the affection between them. "Go back to work!"
But I turned sideways and called out to her, "Wait a minute. Help me make a cup of coffee."
Max reminded me hypocritically, "Honey, you just had a stomach problem. You can't drink coffee."
I was determined to be difficult today. "Krista, in that case, please go downstairs and buy me a cup of milk, five-point sweetness, large size."
As soon as I gave the order, the two of them exchanged glances, thinking I was blind. Finally, Krista replied weakly, "Yes, Mrs. Cornwell. I'll go right away."
As soon as Krista left, Max started to feel sorry for her. "Vicky, you never used to put on airs when you came to the company. What's wrong with you today..."
I didn't wait for him to finish and interrupted, "It's precisely because I don't come often that I have to put on airs."
"Lola reminded me yesterday that young girls who just graduated are prone to taking shortcuts." "Of course, I know you're not that kind of person."
Max lied effortlessly. "Honey, I love you so much!"
That was bullshit!
