Chapter 5: Get married today.
(Amelia's POV)
My heart hammered in my chest as I stared at Alexander. His words, calm and unwavering, left no room for argument. After tonight, you're my Luna, in every way.
The room felt suffocatingly quiet despite its spaciousness. I could hear the faint ticking of a clock somewhere, but its rhythm only added to the storm raging inside me.
Alexander hadn't moved, his towering frame still imposing as he stood in front of me. Cedar and peppermint filled the air again, his intoxicating scent teasing my senses.
“Why today?” I managed, my voice barely above a whisper.
He crouched slightly to meet my gaze, his green eyes locking onto mine like they could see straight through me. “Because every second this remains unresolved, it leaves both of our territories vulnerable. This isn’t just about us, little healer.”
His tone softened as though sensing my hesitation. “You’ve seen it yourself—the rumors, the consequences. Do you want to second-guess this and deal with the repercussions of an unclaimed mark?”
I forced myself to speak despite the lump in my throat. “But… the pack… the other Alphas…”
Alexander’s lips tilted into a small smile, one that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “The Stone Pack doesn’t bow down to outdated traditions or noble bloodlines, Amelia. If anyone believes otherwise, they’ll have me to answer to.”
The casual confidence in his tone made my chest tighten. It wasn’t arrogance, though—no, it wasn’t just for show. He believed every word he said.
“Both the Winters family and your own warrior bloodline are more deserving than you give them credit for,” he continued, his voice steady. “You’re more deserving than you give yourself credit for.”
I flinched at his words, an emotion I couldn’t name rising in the back of my throat. How could he say that so easily?
“You don’t even know me,” I murmured, tears pricking my eyes without my permission. “Why would you…”
His expression softened just a fraction, but he didn’t move, didn’t drop that steady gaze. “I know enough. Fate chose you, Amelia.”
Cora howled approvingly in my head, filling me with warmth against my better judgment. But despite her exuberance, I felt so small in that moment. So unworthy.
The weight of his gaze didn’t lessen. Slowly, he spoke again, each word deliberate. “You’re more capable than you believe. Don’t let the opinions of others or the shadows of your past tell you otherwise.”
His certainty felt like a balm and a burden all at once.
I was trembling by then, my hands twisting together in my lap as I fought to keep my emotions in check. The sincerity in his voice made it harder. “Alexander…”
“You’ll do fine,” he interrupted gently, his firm tone cutting through my doubts. Then, his lips curved slightly, almost teasingly. “But first, you need to stop pacing around like a scared rabbit.”
I blinked up at him, realizing he was right—I had been pacing again without noticing. Heat rushed to my cheeks as I opened my mouth to argue, but no words came out.
Alexander’s smirk deepened. He took a step closer, his tall frame looming just enough to make me forget how to argue altogether.
“You’re nervous,” he said simply, his tone soft but laced with understanding.
I bit my lip, my throat struggling with the lump that wouldn’t go away. “I’m… overwhelmed,” I admitted quietly.
His expression softened further, a flicker of something I couldn’t quite place crossing his face. Compassion, maybe?
Then he did something I didn’t expect.
He sat down beside me, the bed shifting slightly under his weight. The cedar and peppermint scent grew stronger, spreading warmth through my chest in spite of myself.
I stiffened instinctively as the proximity sent shivers racing along my skin.
“Relax,” he murmured, smiling faintly.
Relax? With him sitting this close? Impossible.
But then his tone shifted slightly, teasing again as he leaned back on the bed casually. “I promise, little healer, I won’t bite back.”
I turned to glare at him, glaring like I hadn’t spent the last twenty-four hours making a fool of myself in every possible way. The lazy amusement in his green eyes only made my cheeks burn hotter.
“You’re… so…” I stammered, trying to come up with something—not even sure what—but failing miserably.
“Kissable?” he supplied coyly.
I nearly choked on my breath. “No!”
He arched a brow, the smirk never leaving his lips, and I groaned under my breath. This man… this Alpha King… was insufferable.
Alexander chuckled, clearly pleased by my reaction. Then, without warning, he reached up and gently brushed the tears I hadn’t even realized I’d shed from the corner of my eye.
His touch was light—a whisper against my skin—but it was enough to make my breath catch.
“I wouldn’t dream of forcing this, Amelia,” he said softly, his voice carrying an edge of something I couldn’t quite name. “But I believe in this bond. I believe in you.”
The genuine warmth in his eyes froze me in place.
Cora purred in delight as if he’d said those words just for her.
Then, before I could think twice, I straightened my spine and met his gaze head-on. “No,” I said, my voice trembling slightly but growing firmer with each word. “I’m not reconsidering. I’ll do it. I’ll accept companionship.”
Alexander stared at me for a long moment, his sharp features unreadable. My heart thudded in my chest as I braced for his response.
Then, his carefully composed expression faltered—just slightly.
Joy, unmistakable and almost overwhelming, flickered across his face before disappearing as quickly as it came.
The bond between us hummed, a spark of warmth wrapping around my chest as though Logan, his wolf, shared in that joy.
Alexander’s lips curved into a smile—not the playful smirk or teasing grin I’d become accustomed to, but a softer, more genuine one that made my breath catch.
“Be my Luna, then,” he said softly, his voice carrying a quiet authority that sent shivers down my spine.
I nodded, managing to find my voice. “Okay.”
It wasn’t much, but it was enough to make the bond between us thrum with approval once more.
Then Alexander stood, extending his hand toward me. “Get up. There’s no time to waste.”
I blinked in surprise, hesitating for half a second before taking it. His grip was warm and steady, sending another cascade of sparks skittering across my skin.
He helped me to my feet, his other hand resting briefly on my shoulder as I wobbled slightly from the remnants of my hangover.
“When are we going to do it?” I asked, biting my lip nervously. “The marking, I mean.”
Alexander’s gaze darkened slightly, dropping to rest on the curve of my neck. His expression remained calm, but the bond hummed faintly with something I couldn’t quite place.
“Today,” he said simply, his tone brooking no argument.
His green eyes met mine again, and I could see the seriousness lurking beneath his calm composure. “We don’t have the luxury of waiting. The stability of the pack depends on this.”
That made sense, logically. And yet, knowing it would happen so soon made my pulse skitter.
I forced my lips to move, forcing myself to agree despite the way my nerves twisted in protest. “Fine,” I said quietly. “Today, then.”
Alexander’s gaze lingered, searching mine for a split second longer than necessary before his lips twitched upward faintly again.
He knelt then, catching me completely off-guard as he helped me slide on my shoes without a single word.
His large hands brushed against my ankle lightly—as if testing my reaction—but the touch was purely steady. That didn’t stop the flicker of warmth that sparked down through the bond—Cora practically buzzing with contentment.
“I can do it myself,” I mumbled, trying and failing to sound anything but awkward.
Alexander glanced up at me through dark lashes, his green eyes gleaming slightly—a predatory edge to his usual calm demeanor.
“That’s what mates do,” he replied smoothly. The low timbre of his voice sent involuntary goosebumps shooting across my skin.
Then he stood again, rising effortlessly to tower over me once more.
His next words were spoken quietly, but I heard the weight—and the promise—behind them loud and clear.
“After tonight, you’re my Luna, in every way.”
The possessiveness in his tone and the burning intensity in his green eyes made my heart pound uncontrollably.
I swallowed hard, cheeks flaming bright once more despite myself.
And in that moment, as Cedar and peppermint wrapped itself around me again, I realized there was no going back.
