Lies Of The Heart

The rain hadn’t stopped since dawn. It beat against the windows of Ethan’s small apartment, turning the world outside into a blur of silver and gray. Inside, Anika sat hunched over the laptop, her face pale in the flickering glow of the screen. Colby leaned over her shoulder, his voice low. “Is that the same account?” “Yes,” Anika murmured. “The same offshore chain from Richard’s transfer logs. But the signature name changed about six years ago right after Mom disappeared.” Ethan moved closer, his jaw tightening. “It changed to what?” She clicked open the last record, and three words appeared that made all of them freeze. ‘M. Rivera Holdings’ Cayman Islands. Ethan frowned. “Rivera… that was the last name on the hotel she was seen at before she left Dad.” Colby’s eyes narrowed. “You think she’s using it as an alias?” Anika hesitated, then opened another file, a blurred photo attached to the transaction records. It showed a woman in her late forties, elegantly dressed, sunglasses hiding half her face. But the faint smile and the necklace around her neck were unmistakable. Anika’s voice cracked. “That’s her.” Ethan stared in disbelief. “That’s Mom.” Colby frowned, leaning closer. “Who’s that with her?” Anika zoomed in. The man beside Marisol had his arm draped casually around her waist. Silver hair. Expensive suit. A familiar coldness in his posture. Richard O’Connell. Anika’s breath caught. “Oh my God…” Ethan stumbled back, voice shaking. “She… she left us… for him?” Colby exhaled slowly, his fists tightening. “It explains everything. Why Richard had access to your family’s accounts. Why Liam was killed he must’ve discovered their affair, maybe even tried to confront them.” Anika’s voice trembled. “And when he refused to stay silent…” “They silenced him,” Ethan whispered. The weight of it sank like lead between them. Anika’s mind flashed through every lie, every hollow apology, every “it’s for the best” her mother had said before walking away. It all made sense now. She wasn’t running from her family. She was running to Richard. The Drive Hours later, Anika sat in the passenger seat as Colby drove them toward the old marina district, one of Richard’s known shipping fronts. The storm had worsened, thunder rolling low and distant like the growl of an oncoming reckoning. “You sure this is the right place?” Colby asked. “Liam’s files said the offshore routes were being funneled through a front company here,” she said. “If we’re lucky, the paper trail ends with them.” He gave a grim nod. “And if we’re not?” She looked out the rain-blurred window, her voice barely a whisper. “Then we find something worse.” At the Marina The warehouse was nearly empty when they arrived, only the hum of fluorescent lights and the echo of waves slapping against the docks. Anika’s flashlight cut through the dark, glinting off rows of crates stamped with foreign labels. Colby pried open one of the boxes, revealing stacks of forged documents and unmarked envelopes. He whistled low. “Looks like someone’s been busy.” Anika picked up a folder from the desk and flipped it open. Bank records. Transfers. A contract. Her pulse quickened as she read the header ‘Joint Ownership Agreement – R. O’Connell & M. Rivera’ “Oh my God…” she whispered. “They weren’t just lovers. They were partners.” Before she could say more, a sharp sound echoed behind them, the creak of a door. Colby turned, motioning her to stay quiet. Footsteps approached, slow and deliberate. Anika held her breath as the light from the hallway spilled across the floor… and revealed Uncle Richard himself, flanked by two men in dark suits. “Well,” Richard said smoothly, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “I had a feeling curiosity would bring you here, Anika. You and my dear nephew are always digging where you don’t belong.” Colby stepped forward. “You’re finished, Richard. We have everything we need.” Richard’s smirk deepened. “Oh, I don’t think so. You see, those files you found? They’ll vanish by morning and you’ll both be long gone.” The two men reached for their weapons. Anika froze, heart pounding until headlights flashed across the dock, blinding everyone for a split second. A familiar voice shouted, “Police! Drop your weapons!” Ethan emerged from the shadows, a detective at his side. The scene erupted into chaos shouting, movement, the glint of metal and the slam of footsteps. In the confusion, Richard turned to flee toward the pier and Anika followed him into the rain. The Confrontation The storm roared as she cornered him at the edge of the dock. Lightning flashed, illuminating his calm, unbothered face, even now. “You killed Liam,” she shouted over the wind. “You used my mother, ruined everything!” Richard chuckled, his voice icy. “Used her? Oh, my dear, your mother and I understood each other perfectly. She was the one who wanted out from your father, from your perfect little family. I merely gave her a way.” “You disgust me,” she hissed. He tilted his head. “Funny. She said the same thing about you. Said you were too much like him. Too stubborn, too righteous.” Anika’s jaw tightened. “Where is she now?” Richard smiled faintly. “Closer than you think.” Before she could respond, he lunged, grabbing her wrist and trying to shove her toward the edge. She struggled, rain soaking her hair, heart pounding until Colby appeared, slamming into Richard and knocking him to the ground. Sirens wailed in the distance. “Enough!” Colby shouted, pinning him down. “It’s over.” Richard only laughed – that same cold, chilling laugh. “Oh, you think so, boy? You think this ends with me? You have no idea what’s coming.” The police reached them moments later, dragging him to his feet. As they read him his rights, Richard turned his gaze to Anika one last time. “Tell your mother I said goodbye.” Then he was gone. The rain finally eased. Anika stood there, trembling, as Colby placed a hand on her shoulder. “You okay?” he asked quietly. She looked out over the water, the waves reflecting flashes of blue light from the sirens. “No,” she whispered. “Not until I find her.”
