Planning in the Dark

1145 Words
The estate was quiet, but Anika couldn’t feel at ease. The trial had exposed more than just Colby’s legal troubles, it had reopened wounds she thought were healing. And now, with Richard’s name resurfacing, the danger felt immediate. Colby met her in the study, dimly lit, a single lamp casting long shadows on the bookshelves. He held a stack of documents, evidence they had quietly gathered over the past week – financial records, surveillance photos, and even Liam’s notes about Richard’s shady dealings. “We can’t waste time,” Colby said, his voice low, tense. “If Richard’s alive, he knows someone’s digging. He’ll cover his tracks faster than ever.” Anika nodded, taking the papers from him. She felt the weight of responsibility settle on her shoulders. “We need to prove he’s alive before the trial continues. Otherwise, he could manipulate everything – the evidence, the witnesses… even the jury.” Colby leaned against the desk, watching her carefully. “Are you sure you’re ready for this? It’s dangerous, Anika. You know that.” “I don’t care about danger,” she said firmly. “Not anymore. Liam… and everyone else… they deserve the truth. And if it takes everything I have to find it, then so be it.” A faint smile tugged at the corner of Colby’s lips. “That’s the woman I married,” he said softly. Anika ignored the personal comment and focused on the map spread across the desk. “We have three leads: first, the phone number that called me last night – it has an IP trace we haven’t fully decrypted yet. Second, the photos we recovered from the apartment. And third… Liam’s notes. If we can follow the financial trail, we might discover where he’s hiding.” Colby nodded, making notes in his planner. “We should divide and conquer. You handle the IP trace and the financials. I’ll go through the surveillance photos and look for patterns – any contacts, locations, anything unusual.” Anika glanced at him, and for a moment, she saw the man behind the stoicism – someone she could rely on. Someone who would protect her. They worked in silence for hours, the lamp flickering as midnight approached. Outside, the wind rustled the trees, and the estate’s security cameras caught shadows moving in the garden. Anika paused, staring out the window. “Do you feel like we’re being watched?” she asked quietly. Colby turned, eyes narrowing. “Always. But that’s fine. We’ll use it to our advantage. Whoever it is… they’re sloppy.” Her phone buzzed with a notification. She opened it to find a scrambled email with an attachment: a video file. “Colby… look at this,” she said, pressing play. The footage showed a tall figure moving through the O’Connell estate late at night. The angle was poor, the figure blurred, but the way he carried himself – deliberate, methodical – sent chills down her spine. “That’s him,” she whispered. Colby’s jaw tightened. “Richard’s really alive,” he said, voice flat. “And he’s close.” Anika looked at him, determination blazing in her eyes. “Then we need to act fast. We strike first. We find proof before he can act again, before he ruins everything.” Colby reached out, covering her hand with his. “We’ll do it together. And we’ll win. I promise you that.” Anika’s breath caught. She wanted to argue, to push away the closeness, but she didn’t. Not tonight. Tonight, they were allies, partners in a war that had only just begun. The storm outside raged harder, rain slashing against the windows. But inside the study, Anika and Colby worked side by side, the shadows of fear and grief slowly giving way to a quiet, unspoken trust. And somewhere in the dark, Richard’s eyes watched, calculating his next move, unaware that his enemies had already begun to close in. The study was quiet again after hours of strategizing. The storm outside had subsided, leaving a soft drizzle against the windows. Anika finally stretched, rubbing her eyes. “We should rest for a few hours,” she murmured, but neither of them looked ready to sleep. Colby poured them each a small glass of brandy, a rare gesture of relaxation. “A toast,” he said, raising his glass. “To finding the truth… and finally putting an end to Richard’s games.” Anika clinked her glass against his, a small smile tugging at her lips. “To justice… and surviving it.” They drank quietly, letting the warmth settle in as the storm of the past weeks seemed, for a moment, distant. Hours later, Anika was asleep in her room. The faint glow of the nightlight illuminated her features, her breath even and calm for the first time in weeks. But the calm didn’t last. A shadow moved across the room, slipping in through the slightly ajar window. Anika stirred, sensing the presence before she fully woke. Then a hand clamped over her mouth. She gasped, struggling, the figure leaning close. “No! Colby!” she screamed, voice muffled. The sound shattered the silence, echoing through the estate. Colby was instantly awake, the taste of adrenaline sharp in his mouth. He bolted from his room, shouting for anyone nearby. From the hallway, Marcel, his father, and his mother came running, torches and flashlights piercing the darkness. But before the lights could reach the intruder, the figure slipped away fast, silent, leaving only the faintest trace of a shadow and the smell of wet rain. Anika trembled, clutching Colby’s arms as he held her close. “Are you okay?” he asked, voice firm, protective. “I… I think so,” she stammered, though her body shook from the shock. “I… I didn’t even see who it was.” Colby’s jaw was tight. “It doesn’t matter. Whoever that was, they won’t get another chance. From now on…” He looked directly at her, his gaze unyielding. “You’re not sleeping alone anymore. Not ever.” “We’ll both sleep in the main bedroom from now on. No exceptions. No excuses.” She nodded, letting herself be guided back to the main bedroom. The storm outside had returned, rain thrashing against the windows, but for the first time in weeks, she felt protected. Colby moved to the couch in the corner as she settled under the covers. Before she drifted off, she whispered, “Thank you.” “Always,” he replied. The estate fell silent once more but both of them knew the danger wasn’t over. Whoever had tried to attack her was still out there. And Richard’s shadow loomed larger than ever, pulling strings they could barely see. But tonight, at least, she was safe. And Colby would make sure she stayed that way.
