Chapter Five: The Truth We Couldn't Hide
The next morning, Miracle woke up with one thought in his mind.
Amara.
He smiled as he remembered her message from the previous night.
Don't forget your dreams.
Those four words had stayed with him.
Miracle had spent years believing that success was something he had to fight for alone. But now, someone was encouraging him, believing in him, and reminding him that his past did not have to control his future.
He got ready for school with a renewed determination.
Today, he promised himself, he would focus on his studies.
He would work harder.
And he would continue becoming the person he wanted to be.
But deep inside, there was another promise he had quietly made.
He would protect what he and Amara were building.
When Miracle arrived at school, he saw her immediately.
Amara was standing near the classroom window, talking to Sophia.
The moment their eyes met, she smiled.
Miracle smiled back.
He walked toward her.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning.”
“You look happy.”
“So do you.”
“Maybe we're both happy.”
Amara laughed.
“Maybe.”
Miracle wanted to tell her how much her words had encouraged him the previous night, but before he could speak, the bell rang.
They entered the classroom.
For the first few hours, everything seemed normal.
Miracle paid attention during lessons. He answered questions and even helped Daniel with an assignment.
But during break, something changed.
Amara received a message on her phone.
She read it.
Her smile disappeared.
Miracle noticed.
“What's wrong?”
She quickly locked her phone.
“Nothing.”
Miracle looked at her.
“You're doing it again.”
“Doing what?”
“Saying nothing when something is wrong.”
She sighed.
“It's just a message.”
“From who?”
She hesitated.
“Nathan.”
Miracle's expression became serious.
“What did he want?”
“I don't know.”
“You don't know?”
“He just asked me to meet him.”
Miracle remained quiet.
“Are you going?”
Amara shook her head.
“No.”
“Good.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because I don't trust him.”
Amara lowered her eyes.
“I don't either.”
Miracle took a deep breath.
“Then don't let him disturb your peace.”
She smiled.
“You're right.”
But Nathan wasn't finished.
Later that afternoon, Miracle was walking toward the library when Nathan stopped him.
“You need to listen to me.”
Miracle stared at him.
“I have nothing to say to you.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“You think Amara is honest with you?”
Miracle's jaw tightened.
“Don't start again.”
“I'm trying to warn you.”
“No. You're trying to destroy something that doesn't belong to you.”
Nathan's eyes hardened.
“You don't know what you're talking about.”
“I know enough.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“You think she chose you because you're special?”
Miracle remained calm.
“I don't care why she chose me. I care about how we treat each other.”
Nathan shook his head.
“You're making a mistake.”
“Maybe.”
Miracle walked past him.
“But it's my mistake to make.”
Nathan watched him leave.
For the first time, Miracle understood something.
Nathan wasn't trying to protect Amara.
He was trying to possess her.
And Miracle refused to let jealousy decide the future of their relationship.
That evening, Miracle met Amara beneath their tree.
She was already waiting.
“You look worried,” he said.
She sighed.
“I am.”
“Because of Nathan?”
She nodded.
“He won't stop.”
Miracle sat beside her.
“Then don't let him control you.”
“I don't want to lose you.”
Miracle looked at her.
“You won't.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“Because I'm not going anywhere just because someone wants me to.”
Amara smiled, but tears appeared in her eyes.
“Miracle…”
“What?”
“I need to tell you something.”
He became serious.
“I'm listening.”
Amara took a deep breath.
“Before I met you, Nathan and I were very close.”
Miracle nodded.
“You told me.”
“There is more.”
He waited.
“Nathan helped me during a difficult period in my life. He was there when I needed someone to talk to. I thought we were just friends.”
“And he wanted more?”
“Yes.”
Miracle remained silent.
“I didn't know how strongly he felt until he told me.”
“What happened?”
“I rejected him.”
“Why?”
“Because I didn't love him that way.”
Miracle looked at her.
“And after that?”
“He became different.”
“How?”
“He started getting angry whenever I talked to another boy. He wanted to know where I was all the time. He became jealous.”
Miracle's expression hardened.
“That isn't love.”
Amara looked at him.
“What is love then?”
Miracle thought for a moment.
“Love isn't ownership.”
She listened.
“Love isn't forcing someone to stay.”
He continued.
“Love is allowing someone to choose you freely.”
Amara's eyes filled with tears.
“That is why I love you.”
Miracle froze.
For a moment, he wasn't sure he had heard correctly.
“What did you say?”
Amara smiled through her tears.
“I said I love you.”
Miracle's heart raced.
He had imagined hearing those words, but hearing them from her felt different.
He reached for her hand.
“I love you too.”
They sat beneath the tree holding hands.
Neither of them knew what to say next.
Sometimes, words become unnecessary when the heart has already spoken.
Miracle looked at her.
“I promise you something.”
“What?”
“I won't promise that we'll never have problems.”
Amara smiled.
“But I'll promise that when problems come, we'll face them together.”
She nodded.
“And I'll promise that I'll never stop chasing my dreams.”
“Good.”
“And you won't stop chasing yours.”
“I won't.”
They smiled.
For a while, everything felt perfect.
But across the school compound, Nathan stood watching them.
He had seen everything.
He had heard enough.
His face was filled with anger.
He pulled out his phone.
His fingers moved across the screen.
A message appeared on Miracle's phone.
You think you've won?
Miracle looked at the screen.
Another message came.
You haven't seen what I'm capable of.
Amara noticed his expression.
“What happened?”
Miracle showed her the phone.
She sighed.
“It's him.”
Miracle looked at her.
“What are we going to do?”
Amara took his hand.
“We won't allow him to destroy us.”
Miracle nodded.
But deep inside, he knew something had changed.
Their relationship was no longer a secret.
Nathan knew how deeply they cared about each other.
And that made them vulnerable.
The following days became difficult.
Rumors spread around school.
Someone claimed Miracle had been chasing Amara before she rejected Nathan.
Someone else said Amara was secretly dating both boys.
The stories became more ridiculous every day.
Miracle tried to ignore them.
But one afternoon, Daniel approached him with a worried expression.
“Miracle, you need to be careful.”
“Why?”
“People are saying things about you.”
“I know.”
“It's getting worse.”
Miracle sighed.
“Let them talk.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That's easy to say until the rumors start affecting you.”
Miracle became quiet.
He knew Daniel was right.
Words could destroy a person's reputation even when they were lies.
But Miracle refused to let fear control him.
That evening, he found Amara sitting alone.
She looked exhausted.
He sat beside her.
“Are you okay?”
She shook her head.
“I hate this.”
Miracle looked at her.
“You don't have to carry it alone.”
“What if everyone believes the rumors?”
“Then we'll prove them wrong with our actions.”
She looked at him.
“What if Nathan never stops?”
Miracle took a deep breath.
“Then we'll keep standing.”
Amara smiled weakly.
“You always know what to say.”
“Not always.”
She laughed softly.
“You make me feel safe.”
Miracle smiled.
“And you make me want to become better.”
They held hands.
Neither of them realized that their love was becoming stronger because of the pressure around them.
But Nathan was becoming more desperate.
That night, he made a decision.
If he couldn't make Amara leave Miracle willingly, he would find another way.
He opened his phone and stared at an old photograph.
There was a secret in that photograph.
A secret Amara had never told Miracle.
And Nathan knew exactly how to use it.
The next morning, Miracle received another message.
Ask Amara about what happened last year.
Miracle stared at the screen.
His heart began beating faster.
He didn't know what had happened last year.
He didn't know what secret Nathan was talking about.
But one thing was certain.
Nathan had found something from Amara's past.
And he was preparing to use it against them.
Miracle looked toward Amara.
She was smiling at him from across the classroom.
He smiled back.
But this time, his smile carried a question.
What was she hiding?
And for the first time since they fell in love, Miracle realized that loving someone also meant learning how to face the parts of their past they were afraid to reveal.
The truth was coming.
And when it arrived, it would test everything they had promised each other.
