THE LOVE BEHIND MY SCARS
Chapter Eight: When Trust Is Tested
Miracle had always believed that the truth would set people free.
But as he stood outside the school gate that morning, he began to wonder if some truths were meant to hurt before they healed.
He looked at his phone again.
Nathan's last message was still there.
“If you want to know the truth about Amara, come alone.”
Miracle had spent the entire night thinking about it.
He had almost deleted the message.
Then he remembered Amara's face when she saw the photograph.
There was fear in her eyes.
Not guilt.
Fear.
And that difference mattered.
“Miracle?”
He quickly put his phone away.
Amara was standing behind him.
“You're here early,” she said.
“So are you.”
She smiled.
“I couldn't sleep.”
Miracle looked at her carefully.
“Because of Nathan?”
She nodded.
“I don't know what he's planning.”
Miracle wanted to tell her about the message, but something stopped him.
He remembered what Nathan had asked.
Come alone.
But Miracle didn't want to keep secrets from Amara.
“I received a message from Nathan last night,” he finally said.
Amara's smile disappeared.
“What did he say?”
“He wants me to meet him after school.”
“Why?”
“He says he knows something about you.”
Amara looked away.
“Miracle, please don't go.”
“Why?”
“Because I don't trust him.”
“I don't either.”
“Then don't go.”
Miracle sighed.
“I need to know what he's trying to do.”
“You don't need to know everything.”
“Yes, I do.”
Amara stepped closer.
“I'm scared.”
Those two words changed everything.
Miracle looked into her eyes.
“You don't have to be.”
“What if something happens to you?”
“Nothing will happen.”
“You don't know that.”
She grabbed his hand.
“Promise me you won't go alone.”
Miracle hesitated.
Then he nodded.
“I promise.”
Amara smiled weakly.
“Thank you.”
They walked into school together.
For the first few hours, everything seemed normal.
But Miracle couldn't stop thinking.
There was something about Nathan's behavior that didn't make sense.
If Nathan truly wanted to expose Amara, why was he doing it secretly?
Why not simply tell Miracle everything?
And who was the person texting Nathan?
There were too many unanswered questions.
During lunch break, Miracle found Daniel sitting alone.
“You look like someone stole your happiness,” Daniel said.
Miracle laughed softly.
“Maybe someone is trying to.”
Daniel sat up.
“What happened?”
Miracle explained everything.
Daniel listened carefully.
When Miracle finished, Daniel shook his head.
“Don't go alone.”
“I promised Amara I wouldn't.”
“Good.”
“But I still need to meet Nathan.”
Daniel thought for a moment.
“Then I'll stay nearby.”
Miracle smiled.
“I knew I could count on you.”
Daniel shrugged.
“That's what friends are for.”
Across the school, Amara was talking to Sophia.
“I don't like this,” Sophia said.
“Neither do I.”
“Then why is Miracle going?”
“Because he wants answers.”
Sophia sighed.
“Sometimes answers create more problems.”
Amara looked down.
“I know.”
She had spent so long running away from her past.
Now the past had found her.
And it wasn't willing to let her go.
After school, Miracle walked toward the old basketball court.
Nathan was already waiting.
The sun was beginning to set.
Long shadows stretched across the ground.
“You came,” Nathan said.
Miracle stopped several feet away.
“I said I would.”
Nathan looked around.
“Where's Amara?”
“She isn't coming.”
“You promised to come alone.”
“I did.”
Nathan studied him.
“Are you alone?”
Miracle didn't answer.
Daniel was watching from a distance.
Nathan smiled slightly.
“You've become smarter.”
“I learned from you.”
Nathan laughed.
“Fair enough.”
Miracle crossed his arms.
“Tell me the truth.”
Nathan's smile disappeared.
“You really love her, don't you?”
“Yes.”
“Even after everything?”
“Yes.”
Nathan looked away.
“I don't understand you.”
“You don't have to.”
“I knew her before you.”
“That doesn't mean she belongs to you.”
Nathan's eyes hardened.
“I never said she belonged to me.”
“You act like she does.”
Silence.
Nathan reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
He opened a photograph.
“Look at this.”
Miracle took the phone.
The photograph showed Amara standing outside a building.
But this time, she wasn't alone.
There was another person beside her.
A young man.
Miracle stared at the picture.
“Who is that?”
Nathan smiled.
“You don't recognize him?”
“No.”
“You should.”
“Why?”
“Because he's part of her past.”
Miracle's stomach tightened.
“Stop speaking in riddles.”
Nathan took the phone back.
“That man was Amara's first love.”
Miracle froze.
“What?”
“She never told you?”
Miracle said nothing.
Nathan continued.
“They were together before you met her.”
“That was before me.”
“Yes.”
“So why should I care?”
Nathan looked surprised.
“You don't?”
“No.”
Miracle took a deep breath.
“Whatever happened before me belongs to her.”
Nathan shook his head.
“You're too trusting.”
“Maybe.”
“She's hiding something bigger.”
Miracle's expression became serious.
“Then tell me.”
Nathan looked at him for a long moment.
“She didn't leave him because she stopped loving him.”
Miracle's heart sank.
“Why did she leave him?”
Nathan looked away.
“Because he died.”
Miracle became silent.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
The anger disappeared from his face.
“What?”
“He died in an accident.”
Miracle stared at Nathan.
“Amara never told me.”
“She couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because she blamed herself.”
Miracle slowly sat down.
He remembered the way Amara had spoken about her past.
The sadness.
The fear.
The scars she carried.
Suddenly, everything made more sense.
Nathan continued.
“She was supposed to meet him that night. She changed her mind.”
Miracle looked up.
“And?”
“He drove home alone.”
Nathan's voice became quieter.
“He never made it.”
Miracle felt something heavy in his chest.
“So Amara thinks his death was her fault?”
“Yes.”
Miracle looked toward the ground.
For the first time, he understood why Amara was afraid of losing people.
She wasn't simply afraid of love.
She was afraid of what might happen if she loved someone and lost them again.
Nathan watched him carefully.
“Now you understand why she has so many scars.”
Miracle looked at him.
“Those scars don't make her unworthy of love.”
Nathan said nothing.
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because you deserve to know.”
Miracle stood.
“No.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
“You aren't telling me because I deserve to know.”
Miracle stepped closer.
“You're telling me because you want me to use her pain against her.”
Nathan looked away.
Miracle continued.
“You took something painful from her past and turned it into a weapon.”
“I was trying to protect her.”
“No.”
Miracle shook his head.
“You were trying to control her.”
Nathan became angry.
“You don't understand what I've done for her!”
“Maybe I don't.”
“But I was there when nobody else was!”
“And you keep reminding her of it.”
Nathan became silent.
Miracle's voice softened.
“If you really cared about her, you wouldn't make her feel guilty for needing help.”
Nathan looked down.
For the first time, his anger seemed to disappear.
“You think I'm a bad person.”
“I think you're hurting.”
Nathan looked at him.
“And hurting people doesn't make the pain disappear.”
Nathan didn't respond.
Miracle turned around.
But before he could leave, Nathan spoke.
“There is something else.”
Miracle stopped.
“What?”
Nathan looked at him.
“The man in the photograph didn't die because of the accident.”
Miracle slowly turned back.
“What are you saying?”
Nathan's face had become serious.
“There was someone else involved.”
Miracle stared at him.
“Who?”
Nathan shook his head.
“I don't know.”
“You said you knew the truth.”
“I know what I was told.”
“By who?”
Nathan didn't answer.
“Tell me!”
Nathan looked frightened.
“I'm not the one you should be asking.”
“Then who?”
Nathan looked toward the road.
Before he could answer, a car suddenly drove past them.
Nathan's face changed.
He immediately stepped back.
“Go home.”
“What?”
“Miracle, go home.”
“Who was that?”
Nathan didn't answer.
“Who are you afraid of?”
Nathan looked at him.
“You'll understand soon.”
Then he walked away.
Miracle stood there, confused.
Daniel approached him.
“What happened?”
Miracle looked at him.
“Everything just became more complicated.”
“What did he say?”
Miracle explained.
Daniel listened carefully.
When he finished, Daniel said,
“We need to talk to Amara.”
Miracle nodded.
“Yes.”
But before they could leave, Miracle's phone vibrated.
A message.
This time, from Amara.
“Miracle, where are you?”
He replied:
“I'm coming.”
A second message arrived immediately.
“Please hurry.”
Miracle's heart raced.
Something was wrong.
He and Daniel rushed toward the school gate.
When they arrived, they saw Amara standing alone.
Her face was covered with tears.
Miracle ran toward her.
“What happened?”
She looked at him.
“I found something.”
“What?”
She held out an old envelope.
“I found this in my mother's room.”
Miracle took it.
There was no name on the front.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
Miracle stared at it.
His heart stopped.
It was the same man Nathan had shown him.
But there was something else.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.
“Miracle, if you are reading this, you deserve to know the truth.”
Miracle looked at Amara.
“Who wrote this?”
She shook her head.
“I don't know.”
He continued reading.
“The accident was not what you were told.”
Miracle's eyes widened.
Amara covered her mouth.
“What does that mean?”
Miracle looked at her.
“I don't know.”
The wind blew through the trees.
Neither of them spoke.
Then Amara whispered,
“Maybe the past isn't finished with me.”
Miracle reached for her hand.
“Then we'll face it together.”
She looked at him through her tears.
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
Miracle didn't know what the next day would bring.
He didn't know who was behind the accident.
He didn't know why Nathan had been hiding the truth.
And he didn't know whether the secret would bring him and Amara closer or tear them apart.
But one thing was certain.
He wasn't going to let fear decide their future.
Because love wasn't about having a perfect past.
It was about choosing someone despite their scars.
And sometimes, the person who has been hurt the most is the person who deserves to be loved the hardest.
