THE LOVE BEHIND MY SCARS
Chapter Nine: The Letter
The night was unusually quiet.
Miracle sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the old photograph Amara had given him. The words written on its back refused to leave his mind.
“The accident was not what you were told.”
He had read the sentence at least twenty times.
Still, he couldn't understand it.
Who had written the message?
Why had they written it?
And most importantly, what really happened that night?
His phone vibrated.
Amara: Are you awake?
Miracle immediately replied.
Miracle: Yes. I can't sleep.
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally, she replied.
Amara: Neither can I.
Miracle stared at the screen before typing.
Miracle: We'll find the truth.
Her response came quickly.
Amara: What if the truth is worse than what I believe?
Miracle paused.
Then he typed:
Miracle: Then we'll face it together.
He put his phone down and looked at the photograph again.
He had no idea that by morning, everything he thought he knew about Amara's past would begin to change.
---
The next morning, Miracle arrived at school earlier than usual.
He found Amara sitting beneath their favorite tree.
She looked exhausted.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
Miracle sat beside her.
“You didn't sleep.”
She shook her head.
“Neither did you.”
He smiled faintly.
“I was thinking.”
“About the letter?”
“Yes.”
Amara hugged her knees.
“I've spent years believing that I caused his death.”
Miracle looked at her.
“You were young.”
“I still made the decision not to meet him.”
“That doesn't mean you caused the accident.”
“But if I had gone—”
“Amara.”
She stopped.
“Don't punish yourself for something you couldn't control.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“But what if I really could have saved him?”
Miracle shook his head.
“We don't know that.”
“That is what scares me.”
He reached for her hand.
“You've carried this guilt for too long.”
She looked at him.
“I don't know how to let it go.”
“Maybe you don't have to let it go all at once.”
“What do you mean?”
“You take it one day at a time.”
Miracle smiled.
“Healing isn't forgetting what happened. It's learning that what happened doesn't have to control what happens next.”
Amara wiped her tears.
“You always know what to say.”
“Not always.”
She smiled.
“Most times.”
They both laughed softly.
For a few seconds, the fear disappeared.
Then Amara's expression became serious.
“There is something I need to tell you.”
Miracle looked at her.
“What?”
“The letter wasn't the only thing I found.”
She reached into her bag and pulled out another envelope.
“This was hidden behind some old documents.”
Miracle took it.
“Did you open it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted us to open it together.”
Miracle looked at her.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
“Together.”
He carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Miracle unfolded it.
The handwriting was old.
He began reading.
> Dear Amara,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you. I know you may hate me for keeping this from you, but I was afraid of what would happen if you knew everything.
The night of the accident, I received a phone call. Someone told me that your friend was in danger. I went to the road, but by the time I arrived, the accident had already happened.
There was another car involved.
It didn't stay at the scene.
Someone left before the police arrived.
Amara covered her mouth.
Miracle continued reading.
> I tried to tell your family, but someone warned me to remain silent. They said that if I spoke, more people would suffer.
I made the wrong decision. I stayed silent.
For years, I have carried that guilt.
I am sorry.
The letter ended there.
Amara stared at Miracle.
“There was another car.”
“Yes.”
“Then maybe…”
Her voice broke.
“Maybe it wasn't my fault.”
Miracle nodded.
“Maybe it never was.”
She began crying.
Miracle pulled her into a gentle hug.
For years, Amara had carried a burden that might never have belonged to her.
But now, another question appeared.
Who was driving the second car?
And why had they left?
---
Later that day, Miracle and Daniel searched online for information about the accident.
They found an old news article.
The details were brief.
“Teenager Dies in Road Accident.”
The date matched.
The location matched.
But one detail caught Miracle's attention.
The article mentioned that police had reported evidence of another vehicle near the scene.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Look at this.”
Miracle read the sentence again.
“Police suspected another vehicle was involved.”
“Was anyone arrested?”
Miracle scrolled.
“No.”
“Why?”
“They said there wasn't enough evidence.”
Daniel looked at him.
“This is getting serious.”
Miracle nodded.
“We need to be careful.”
Suddenly, Miracle's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
There was silence.
“Hello?”
A man's voice finally spoke.
“You should stop looking.”
Miracle's heart raced.
“Who are you?”
“You don't need to know.”
“What do you want?”
“Forget the accident.”
Miracle stood up.
“Why?”
The voice became colder.
“Because some truths are dangerous.”
The call ended.
Daniel stared at him.
“What happened?”
Miracle slowly lowered the phone.
“Someone just threatened me.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“We need to tell someone.”
“I know.”
But before they could leave, Miracle received another message.
“You were warned.”
His hands tightened around the phone.
---
That evening, Miracle told Amara everything.
She became frightened.
“This is because of me.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Amara, listen to me.”
She looked at him.
“Someone is trying to scare us away from the truth. That doesn't mean you caused anything.”
“But if they hurt you—”
“They won't.”
“You don't know that.”
Miracle smiled.
“Neither do you.”
She looked down.
“I don't want to lose another person I love.”
Miracle gently lifted her chin.
“You're not going to lose me.”
She stared at him.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
Amara hugged him tightly.
For the first time, Miracle realized that love wasn't always about beautiful moments.
Sometimes love meant standing beside someone when they were terrified.
Sometimes it meant becoming their strength when they had none left.
And sometimes, love meant saying:
“I'm not going anywhere.”
---
The following morning, something unexpected happened.
Miracle received a message from an unknown number.
This time, there was no threat.
There was only an address.
“Come here at 5:00 p.m. If you want the truth.”
Miracle stared at it.
He showed Daniel.
“Do you think it's a trap?”
“Probably.”
“Should I go?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not alone.”
Miracle nodded.
“I'll tell Amara.”
But before he could send her a message, someone walked into the classroom.
It was Nathan.
He looked nervous.
“Miracle.”
Miracle turned.
“What do you want?”
Nathan looked around.
“Can we talk privately?”
Miracle stood.
“What happened?”
Nathan lowered his voice.
“I know who sent the messages.”
Miracle's eyes widened.
“Who?”
Nathan looked toward the door.
“Not here.”
“Tell me.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because if they know I told you, I'm finished.”
Miracle stared at him.
For the first time, Nathan didn't look angry.
He looked genuinely afraid.
“What are you hiding?”
Nathan swallowed.
“The person behind this…”
He paused.
“…is someone you already know.”
Miracle froze.
“Who?”
Nathan looked directly into his eyes.
“Someone close to Amara.”
Before Miracle could respond, Nathan walked away.
Miracle stood there, completely confused.
Someone close to Amara?
Who could it be?
Her mother?
Her father?
Sophia?
Nathan himself?
Or someone else?
He looked toward the classroom door.
The mystery had become deeper.
And the closer Miracle came to the truth, the more dangerous everything became.
But he refused to stop.
Because Amara had spent years believing she was responsible for a death that might not have been her fault.
And Miracle had made a promise.
He would help her find the truth.
Even if that truth changed everything.
Even if it broke their hearts.
Even if it forced them to choose between the love they had found and the secrets that had followed them from the past.
Miracle looked at the clock.
4:37 p.m.
Twenty-three minutes remained.
He didn't know what waited for him at the mysterious address.
But one thing was certain.
At exactly 5:00 p.m., Miracle was going to discover the first real piece of the truth.
And this time, there would be no turning back.
