THE LOVE BEHIND MY SCARS Chapter Twelve: The Promise Sometimes, the person you trust the most is the one carrying the truth that can change your entire life. Morning came quietly, but Miracle didn't feel peaceful. He stood beside his bedroom window, watching the sun rise over the rooftops. The world outside looked normal—people walking to work, students preparing for school, cars moving along the road. But inside him, everything was different. His father's name had been connected to Amara's brother's death. He still couldn't believe it. His phone was on the table. One message from Nathan remained unopened. Miracle had been afraid to read it. Not because he was afraid of Nathan. He was afraid of what the truth might reveal. Finally, he picked up the phone. The message was short. “Meet me before school. Come alone. This concerns your father.” Miracle stared at the words. His heart began beating faster. He immediately thought about Amara. He had promised her he would never hide anything from her. So he sent her a message. “I need to talk to you before school.” Her reply came almost immediately. “Is something wrong?” Miracle hesitated. Then he typed: “Yes. I think our families are connected.” There was no reply. For several minutes, he waited. Then his phone vibrated. “I'm coming.” --- They met near the quiet road behind the school. Amara looked worried. “What happened?” Miracle looked into her eyes. “Did your mother tell you everything?” “No.” “What did she tell you?” Amara took a deep breath. “She said my father was driving another car that night.” Miracle's heart sank. “My father may have been involved too.” Amara stared at him. “What?” “I don't know exactly how yet.” She stepped backward. “Miracle…” “I know how this sounds.” “No.” She shook her head. “I don't care about our fathers right now.” She moved closer. “I care about you.” Miracle looked at her. “Even if my family is connected to what happened?” Amara's eyes filled with tears. “I don't know what happened. And neither do you.” She reached for his hand. “So we find out.” Miracle squeezed her hand. “Together?” “Together.” For a moment, they simply stood there. Two young people caught in a mystery they had never asked for. Two hearts carrying fears they didn't understand. But somehow, they still had each other. Then a voice came from behind them. “Miracle.” They turned. Nathan stood several feet away. Amara immediately became tense. “What do you want?” Nathan looked at her. “I need to apologize.” She frowned. “For what?” “For everything.” Nathan lowered his head. “I was jealous. I was angry. I thought if I exposed Miracle to your past, you'd come back to me.” Amara said nothing. “I was wrong.” Miracle looked at him carefully. “What changed?” Nathan looked frightened. “I discovered who has really been controlling everything.” “Who?” Nathan looked around. “Not here.” Miracle sighed. “Then where?” Nathan pulled a small piece of paper from his pocket. He handed it to Miracle. There was an address written on it. “Go there tonight.” Miracle looked at him. “What will I find?” Nathan's voice became quiet. “Your father's old house.” Miracle froze. “My father has an old house?” Nathan nodded. “He left it years ago.” “Why?” “That's where the truth began.” Amara looked at Miracle. “What does he mean?” Nathan stepped backward. “You'll understand when you get there.” He turned to leave. “Nathan!” He stopped. Miracle asked, “Why are you helping us now?” Nathan didn't turn around. “Because I finally realized something.” “What?” Nathan looked over his shoulder. “Loving someone doesn't mean possessing them.” Then he walked away. Amara stared after him. “I never thought I'd hear him say that.” Miracle smiled faintly. “People can change.” “Do you believe that?” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because I've had to change too.” Amara looked at him. Miracle continued. “Life has taught me that we can't change what happened yesterday. But we can choose what we do today.” She smiled. “You always turn everything into motivation.” “Maybe someone needs to hear it.” “I do.” He looked at her. “Then remember this: your past may explain your scars, but it doesn't have the right to control your future.” Amara's eyes filled with tears. She hugged him. “Thank you.” Miracle held her tightly. He didn't know what awaited them at his father's old house. He didn't know whether the truth would bring them closer or destroy everything between them. But he knew one thing. He wasn't going to run. --- That evening, Miracle and Amara stood outside the abandoned house. The gate was rusty. The garden had grown wild. The windows were covered in dust. Miracle slowly pushed the gate open. It made a loud creaking sound. Amara held his hand. “Are you sure we should be here?” “No.” She looked at him. He smiled. “But sometimes you have to walk into the unknown to find the answers you're looking for.” They entered. Inside, everything was covered in dust. Old furniture. Old photographs. Old memories. Miracle walked toward the living room. Then he stopped. A photograph hung on the wall. He stared at it. His father was standing beside another man. Amara stepped closer. Her eyes widened. “That man…” Miracle looked at her. “What?” She pointed at the photograph. “That was Daniel's father.” Miracle froze. “What?” Amara touched the photograph. “I've seen him before.” Miracle looked closer. Then he noticed something else. On the table beneath the photograph was an old diary. He picked it up. The first page contained one sentence. “If my son ever discovers the truth, I hope he will forgive me.” Miracle's hands began shaking. He opened the next page. And the next. Then he found the date. The same date as the accident. Amara stood beside him. “Read it.” Miracle swallowed. He began. “Tonight, everything went wrong.” He turned the page. “I was supposed to meet him.” Another page. “But someone followed me.” Miracle's breathing became heavy. Then he reached the final written page. Only one sentence remained. “The person responsible was someone I trusted.” Miracle slowly closed the diary. Amara stared at him. “Who?” He shook his head. “I don't know.” Then they heard a noise upstairs. Both of them froze. Footsteps. Someone was walking slowly across the floor above them. Amara whispered, “Miracle…” He held her hand. “Stay behind me.” The footsteps stopped. Silence returned. Then a man's voice came from upstairs. “I've been waiting for you.” Miracle's heart raced. He looked at Amara. Then slowly began climbing the stairs. Step by step. The truth was waiting at the top. And this time, there was nowhere left to hide.
