Kayla POV
AP Chemistry is my hardest subject of the semester, how am I supposed to focus with Nick right behind me and Hector sitting right next to me? It's not possible to focus on moral mass when I can smell s*x coming off of him and I don't even know what that smells like. Great, just great.
By the time class had ended, I have decided I was switching classes. I'll go in and talk to my counselor first thing tomorrow morning.
"Hey Kayla, can you stay back after class for a bit?" Miss Jones asks, "You as well, Hector."
"Yes, Miss Jones!" I say as I pack my bag. This day was never going to end.
" Yes, Miss Jones, only if Hector stays too." Madison teases. I shot her my deadliest look as she walks towards the door, I quickly look around to making sure Hector and no one else heard her.
"See you tomorrow Kayy," she says over her shoulder winking at me her blonde hair whipping behind her. As I turn to finish packing my bag, I catch a glimpse of Nick in the corner packing his things, I had almost forgotten he was here, crazy the way one man's presents can make you forget the presents of another. Almost as if on Que, he lift his head, and I was greeted by those electric eyes once again, and right after a wave of heat hit my body like thunder rolling in.
"Kayla, could you come up here." I heard miss Jones say, snapping me out of the spell I was just put under, "Of course, Miss Jones" I say still staring into Nicks eyes. I silently pray to myself that the heat forming deep inside me wasn't showing on my face, I finish placing my books in my bag and saunter up to Miss Jones desk where she and Hector are watching me.
"Kayla, I was thinking you could give Hector a tour of the school and help him to his classes tomorrow. Today is his first day and I am sure he would appreciate the help! Oh no.
"Of course, I would love to help!".
Nicks POV
Class is over and not so much as a glance, didn't even look at me just kept drooling of Mr. Tool case.
Mid thought an earsplitting ring interrupts my thoughts, it's about time this class ended. As I'm packing my bag, I overhear Miss Jones asking Kayla to stay after class for something. James says something causing me to look up, I am caught off guard as I am greeted by the most beautiful pair of eyes.
"Wow, should I start calling you lover boy?" James laughs, I brush him off and continue packing my bag, "No seriously Nick, the girls got a thing for you."
James and I walk pass Ms. Jones desk as we head for the classroom door, I overhear Kayla agreeing to something the teacher said her voice laced with too much enthusiasm, as we past behind her I reach my fingers out gently running my hand through the ends of her hair. I feel electricity slither its way up my finger tips before my vision becomes blurry and the faint sound of a woman's voice humming a lullaby fills my ears. I can hear James calling out to me but can not make out his words as the woman humming vibrates my ear drums.
My heart is racing, my lungs are struggling to take in a breath, it feels like I am beginning to suffocate.
I feel my knees growing weak under me before they give out, smashing into the floor under me. The sound of the woman humming continuing to grow louder in my ears.
A picture of a woman sitting in a dark brown rocking chair appears behind my eyelids, a little girl around the age of 4 sits in front of her as the woman braids her hair and continues to hum a lullaby. The young girls' eyes are closed as the women's fingers work their way through the girls' hair. The woman stops humming as she bends down and whispers in the girl's ear, I can feel myself lean in closer to hear what is being said when the young girl's eyelids yank open and I am once again greeted by a pair of gorgeous gray eyes.
I feel air fill back into my lungs as the pressure lifts off my chest.
"Nick, can you hear me?" a woman's voice replaces the sound of the woman humming as I gain control of my body. I open my eyes and am once again immersed in those same deep gray eyes.
KAYLA’S POV
I am looking down at Nick's body lying on the floor. I can hear James yelling in the distance as I crouch down next to Nick, I ignore the electricity that shoots up my arms as I place my fingers against his wrist, checking for a pulse.
"His pulse is weak," I whisper looking down at Nick's body lying just inches away from me. I can hear sobbing coming from behind me pulling my attention from Nick and back to my classmates, who have now backed away from us and are now watching me as I sit down next to Nicks body.
My heart is pounding in my chest as I lightly brush my fingers through his hair, pushing it back out of his face. I lift his head up off the floor and gently position his head in my lap as I run my fingers through his hair. I gently begin to hum the song my mother used to sing to me as a child, and continue to run my fingers through his hair. I watch as his blonde hair passes through my fingers, sending shocks of electricity up my arms. I close my eyes as I brush my hand down his cheek, resting my fingers against his neck as I quietly count his heart beats out loud.
"Nick, can you hear me?" I whisper in his ear, my face just inches away from his. I open my eyes and am caught off guard when a pair of emerald green eyes are looking back at me, a mischievous grin playing on his lips as he looks up at me.
"What happened?" Nick says, his head still resting in my lap as my right hand is still tangled in his hair and my other left hand is still resting on his neck.
"I'll tell you what happened. You gave us all a f*****g heart attack, Nick!" Lexi's high pitched voice says from beside me, startling me. When did she get there?
I look around to see everyone's eyes are still settled on me and Nick.I untangle my hand from Nick's hair as I go to lift his head out of my lap, when I feel his hand wrap around my wrist, bringing my focus back to his eyes that are still focused on mine. His eyes are filled with an emotion I don't quite understand, he parts his lips as if to say.
"Oh Nick, are you hurting ?" Lexi says next to me, her body pushing against mine as she tries to take my place underneath Nick. I don't want to cause a scene, so I slip out from underneath him, making my way towards the classroom door.
Once outside the classroom, I press my back up against the cool brick, only now realizing how hot my body felt, sliding my back down the wall, I cross my arms over my knees and rest my forehead on them. What was wrong with me?
I could feel tears spring to my eyes as I begin to think the same words I have thought my entire life: No one loves an orphan. I close my eyes as I try to calm myself down. I take a deep breath before opening my eyes to see Hector sitting beside me, he is mirroring the same pose as me, just sitting there watching me breath.
A light smile forms on his lips, "Hey, I saw you leave the classroom after what happened. I just wanted to check on you and introduce myself." Hector says as he stands up, offering me his hand. "I'm Hector." I grab his hand, allowing him to help me up off the floor.
"I am Kayla" I reply dusting off the back of my legs, "I am sorry for just takingoff like that, I didn't feel good." I lie. "So i will see you tomorrow, I am going to head out." I say pointing at the big double Exit doors.
"Can I give you a ride?" Hector blurts out before stumbling over his words, "I mean uh you are showing me around tomorrow so I figured I could pick you up in the morning, so if I take you home now, I would know where to pick you up tomorrow." I can see the embaressment spread across his face as he tries to figure out the words to say.
I am about to tell Hector no when I see Nick walk out of the classroom with no one other than Lexi, I feel my heart sink to the floor before focusing my attention back on Hector his deep blue ocean eyes sparkling back at me "I would love for you to take me home Hector."
I will not allow myself to be hung up on Nick Foster.
Nicks Pov
I don't know what happened. One moment I am about to ask Kayla to stay with me and the next she is agreeing to leave with another guy.
I am peering out the car window when James interrupts my train of thought, "So you wannaa talk about what just happened back there with you and Kayla?"
" There's nothing to talk about." I lie hoping he will let the whole thing go.
"Okay, well you didn't see what the rest of us saw." He says as he pulls into Antwons, we are picking up a load to run for him today. "I'm only not pushing this because we have a job to do right now, but when were done we are talking about it."
By the time we finish, it is nearly 11:30 and James still has to drive us back across town. "I think she likes you." James says from the driver's seat, dialing down the volume, "And before you say anything, I watched what happened back there. I saw the look of panic on her face when she said your pulse was weak, and even now, I can still see the look on her face when you opened your eyes. She positioned herself under her enormous rock of a head, she caressed your face as she ran her fingers through your hair, she was scared for you, Nick. I have never seen anyone hold that much emotion in their eyes for someone else before."
"She was doing what anyone would do for someone who just crashed to the floor. I passed out in the middle of class and everyone knows Kayla is on track to going to med school. She couldn't just leave me to die in front of everyone. Not to mention, I watched her walk away with the new guy, she was all too happy to get away from me." I reply. I can hear James sigh as he turns onto my street.
I am walking up the rock walkway when James calls to me from his car window, "Just think about what I said Nick, she could be feeling the same things you are, and you're blowing it off as some bullshit coincidence." He pulls away from the curb before I have an opportunity to tell him to f**k off.
Light is illuminating through the living room window and pooling out onto the porch. Mom must still be awake. I think to myself as I take the steps up the porch. I open the front door to see my mom laying on the brown sectional I got her last year for Mother's day watching tv.
"Hey mom," I say placing my keys on the hook.
"Hey sweetheart, I wanted to make sure you got in okay." She say between yawns. I know she worries about me and she has good reason to worry, last year I ended up in the trauma ICU when a rival g**g got the drop on one of our shipments and ended with me in the ICU with two bullets in my chest. I can still hear my mom sobbing as they told her my chances weren't looking good and that she needed to say goodbye to me. A few moments later, I was intubated, unable to speak, listening to my family and friends say their goodbyes to me. A few days later, they pulled out the tube. They were expecting me to pass shortly after. Thankfully, my lungs started working and I was able to breathe on my own.
After that night, my mother begged me to quit working for Antwon. I couldn't. The only way out is to be jumped by the other members. No one who has attempted to get out has lived through it.
A few months later, I sat down in front of my lawyers and made a plan in case something were to happen to me again, each of my siblings have their own account with enough money for college if they chose that route, plus some money for living expenses, and my mother would get the rest. My rental property, the house, and the vehicles were already in my mother's name.
"You don't need to stay up every night mom, you have things to care for in the morning, I don't want you -"
"First of all, you are my baby and my biggest concern will always be you and your siblings." She stands up, cutting me off. " And second of all, I will spend my time as I choose and, if that means sitting up and waiting on you, I will do just that." She says as she walks over to me placing a kiss on my cheek. "That little s**t you hang around is waiting for you up stairs."
"Lexi ?" I ask, a little confused, considering I've been blowing her off all day. "That girl can't take a hint," I say to myself as I climb the stairs to my room. I push open the white wooden door to see Lexi sitting on the edge of my bed completely n***d.
"What the f**k Lexi! My brothers could have walked in here" I hiss. She looks up at me her doe eyes swirling with l**t. I sit down beside her the mattress dipping under my weight. "Listen, Lexi, I really don't think we should continue this anymore.
“Before you say anything else I wanted to talk to you about that, I understand you’re pissed at me right now. I know we had a deal and that I have been crossing boundaries.” She says turning to face me pushing her shoulders back causing her boobs to push forwards. I close my eyes preparing to tell her I am not interested in what we had going on before when I feel her mouth collide with mine, her mouth beginning to trail down my neck to my collarbone as she licks and nips at my skin. Leave it to Lexi to take a vulnerable situation and make it s****l. Without hesitation Lexi pushes me back onto the bed climbing on top of me, causing me to let out a deep breathless moan as she continues to kiss down my neck, snaking her hand into my hands. I can feel my manhood pushing against the fabric of my pants, without a second thought I throw Lexi down on the bed and take full advantage of my position over her n***d body. I gently scan my fingers over her stomach causing a trail of goosebump, I smash my mouth into hers as I start making my way down her neck when I get to her bare chest, I circle my tongue around her n****e before sucking it into my mouth. Her body begins to tremble as she lets out a breathless moan, I slide my hand under the small of her back swiftly flipping her onto her stomach. I lean forward brushing my lips against her spine, I slide my d**k between causing her body to squirm underneath me as she lets out a moan. I pull back before sliding inside her.
“f**k Kayla.” Shit
“What the f**k did you just call me Nick?” Lexi says as she shoves me off of her. “Did you just call me another b***h’s name? Are you serious right now?” Lexi continues to throw on her clothes as she storms out of my room by passing my mother on her way down the stairs.
“Well, I would ask what you did but I am pretty sure everyone on the block knows.” My mother says holding back a smirk. “You want me to close your door?”
“If you would and turn off the light.” I say laying on my back looking up at the ceiling, remembering the picture of Riley I used to have pinned to the ceiling when we first moved in.
Riley was my ex-girlfriend and the only girl I had ever loved. Riley and I had dated for almost 2 years before I moved to the west side.
Flashback to the day Riley left Nick
She kissed me with no hesitation as if this was it, this was the last time we would ever see each other. She had known it before I did. I sat on the floor with Riley in my arms for what felt like hours soaking up every minute we had together. When Riley looked up at me her hazel eyes bloodshot and her face-streaked red from her tears, she stood up walking to my bedroom door.
“Everyone in my life has caused me nothing but pain, I don’t want you to remember our relationship as something painful.” She glanced over at me looking me in the eyes as she told me goodbye. No sign of uncertainty in her voice.
I could feel my chest giving in as I her leaving was physically digging a hole in to my chest, the place she had filled all these years was now hollow.
My mom came in moments later to find me still sitting on the floor heartbroken and lost, she didn’t ask me any questions just sat down beside me, wrapping me in her arms, just holding me. “She left mom.” My voice was cracking as I said the words. “ She said she didn’t want to remember me as another heartbreak, didn’t even try, no fight, just left.” I could feel the tears streaking down my face. She didn’t say anything, just kissed the top of my head as she held me.
