A Mother's Rage

Harlow Pov Dr. Silver didn't look like a medical professional with his messy beard that made him look more like a lumberjack than a doctor and his faded outfit but the more he worked, the more I was convinced he knew what the hell he was doing. He pulled a thick needle from a glass vial, tapping the plastic syringe twice before leaning over my bed. Max didn't even flinch when the needle pierced his arm for he was too far gone, his breathing shallow and rapid, his skin radiating a terrifying amount of heat. "This is a heavy suppressant," he said, focused on his work. "It’s going to force his nervous system to stop trying to shift. But it’s not a cure, Harlow." "What should I do?" I asked, my voice shaking. "His temperature is very high and if we don’t get it down in the next ten minutes, his brain is going to start taking permanent damage." My stomach dropped. "What do you need?" "Ice," he said, tossing the empty syringe into his bag. "Lots of it. Towels, a bucket of cold water, whatever you can carry. Go to the main kitchen downstairs. I need it right now." I didn't hesitate for another second, I turned and ran for the bedroom door, grabbing the handle and yanking it open, almost colliding with a wall of solid muscle. Two of Torin's men were standing right outside the door, their arms crossed over their leather cuts. One of them, a younger guy with a sharp jaw and dark hair, held his hand up, blocking the doorway. "President’s orders, Harlow," he said. He didn't sound mean, but he didn't move an inch either. "Nobody goes in, and you don't come out. Torin wants you locked down." "My son is cooking to death in there," I snapped, pointing a shaking finger at his chest. "The doctor needs ice from the kitchen. You can either shoot me for leaving this room, or you can walk me down there yourself. But I am not letting my baby die because Torin is having a power trip." He stared at me, clearly caught off guard by the total lack of submission. Shifters were used to humans cowering but I was done cowering. He glanced at his partner, then let out a sigh. "I'm Dex. Keep your head down, walk fast, and don't talk to anyone. I'll escort you to the kitchen doors, but I have to stay in the hall." "Fine," I said, pushing past him. The clubhouse was quieter now, the rain outside drowning out the noise from the bar. Dex walked closely behind me, his boots thudding against the floor. We reached the kitchen at the back of the first floor and Dex pushed the swinging doors open for me, stepping back to stand guard in the hallway. I rushed inside, the doors swinging shut behind me. The kitchen was massive, lined with stainless steel prep tables, heavy stoves, and a massive walk-in freezer. I could almost hear my heart beating if not for the low hum of the refrigerators. Without wasting time, I found a large metal mixing bowl on one of the drying racks, grabbed it and hurried over to the commercial ice machine against the far wall, yanking the plastic scoop from its holder. I started digging into the ice, tossing big scoops into the bowl. I was still scooping when I heard the doors open. At first I didn't turn, thinking it was Dex but the hair at the back of my neck stood, stopping me in my track. I turned around, the metal scoop still in my hand and saw Silas stepped out of the shadows near the pantry. A second later, Vanya stepped out right behind him. Her black dress was slightly rumpled, and her dark lipstick was smeared at the corner of her mouth. I stared at them, my heart in my mouth. "I see you ignored my warning, human," he started. Then walked slowly toward me, his hands clenched in fists beside him. I set the ice scoop down on the counter with shaking hands, but I forced my chin up. "I'm just here for ice. My son is sick." "He isn't sick," he corrected, stopping on the opposite side of the prep table. His eyes were cold, filled with a disgust. "He is defective. A half-blood abomination whose body is rejecting its own existence. You never should have brought that infection into my club." Vanya stepped up beside him, crossing her arms. She looked me up and down, a cruel sneer twisting her lips. "Look at you. Wearing cheap, wet rags. Torin just stripped me of my Luna rank and kicked me out of the Alpha wing because of you. But do you honestly think you belong here? You are a stray dog sitting in a house of wolves." I completely ignored her because she was just the jealous ex. Silas was the real threat. "Move out of my way," I said, reaching for the bowl full of ice. "I need to get back upstairs." Silas slammed his hand down on the prep table. The loud crack made me jump, but I didn't step back. "You aren't going anywhere," he growled. He leaned over the table, letting a small amount of his Alpha aura bleed into the room. If I were a wolf, the invisible force of his dominance would have forced me to my knees. But I was human. Instead I just felt a slight change in the air pressure. "I gave you a choice five years ago, Harlow. You were smart enough to take it then. You packed your bags and ran to save your pathetic life. I suggest you do it again tonight." "I can't," I replied clearing my throat. "Torin won't let me leave." "I don't care what Torin wants," he spat, his face going red with anger. "He is a fool thinking with his diseased wolf. I built this club and also kept this bloodline pure. If you don't walk out of those gates tonight, I will handle the problem myself and I promise you, you'll not like the outcome. So I suggest you act now that I'm still nice to you." Something inside me snapped. Maybe it was the five years of running. Maybe it was the feeling of helplessness from the cartel debt hanging over my head. Or maybe it was simply the fact that I was a mother, and this man had just threatened my child for the second time in my life. Without thinking things through, I reached blindly toward the knife block sitting on the end of the prep table and my fingers immediately closed around the thick, black handle of a steak knife that I ripped out of the block, rounded the corner of the table, and charged at him. Silas was fast, but he didn't expect a fragile human to attack an Alpha. He didn't have time to shift as I slammed my left hand into his chest, pinning him against the refrigerator, and pressing the pointy end of the blade directly against his throat. "Are you insane?" Vanya screamed, taking a step back as he gasped, his eyes going wide. "Shut up," I hissed, not taking my eyes off him. I pressed the blade harder against his skin until a faint, hissing sound filled the air, followed immediately by the smell of burning flesh. He gritted his teeth, a low groan escaping his throat as the metal seared his skin. "Silver," I whispered, watching the realization dawn in his eyes. Mama Carmela kept real silver cutlery in the kitchen for special occasions, knowing exactly how lethal it was to the pack. "Burns, doesn't it?" He glared down at me, his fists clenching, but he didn't move. He knew if he so much as tried to shove me away, the blade would slice through before he would even have time to blink. "You think I'm scared of you?" I asked. "You think you can intimidate me the same way you did when I was eighteen? I am twenty-four years old and owe a cartel two hundred thousand dollars. They are hunting me right now with guns loaded with silver bullets. I have survived the human underworld for five years to keep my baby alive. You hear me? You are just a bitter old man who hates his own son." His chest heaved against my hand as the burn mark on his throat was blistering beneath the silver edge of the knife. "Torin will kill you for this," he ground out. "He isn't here," I replied coldly. "I am. And I am telling you this once, if you ever threaten my son again, if you ever take one step toward that bedroom, I won't run away like a scared teenager. I will gut you in your sleep." I held his gaze for five long seconds, making absolutely sure he understood that I meant every single word. I had nothing left to lose, which made me the most dangerous person in this room. Once I was sure he got the message, I slowly pulled the knife away from his throat. He immediately brought a hand up to the burn mark on his neck, his eyes burning with pure hatred. Vanya rushed to his side, looking at me like I was a complete psychopath. I didn't care. I tossed it back to the table, grabbed the bowl full of ice, turned my back on both of them, and walked straight out the swinging doors. Dex was waiting in the hallway, completely oblivious to what had just happened. "Got the ice," I told the young biker, my voice perfectly steady. "Let's go," he said, leading the way back to the stairs. My hands were shaking so violently that the ice rattled against the sides of the bowl, but my spine was straight. I wasn't running, at least not from him. Not when my child's life was at stake.
