Chapter 3

Tessa Dom looked rattled. His hair was messy, like he’d been running his fingers through it nonstop, and his eyes were wild as they locked onto me. I backed up slowly as he stepped closer. I had no idea what to do. I could hear his heavy breathing, and it hit me all over again just how dangerous werewolves could be. Fear flooded my body. When my back bumped against the sink, my heart hammered wildly. “What… what are you doing here?” “What the hell are you wearing?” he snapped, sounding furious. He looked wound tight, like he was fighting to hold something back. I figured it was pure hate and disgust. “I…” The words died in my throat. I could barely breathe as he leaned in. I wanted to bolt—like those cartoon characters that leave a hole in the wall behind them. But panic froze me in place. Dom moved even closer, planting his hands on the sink on either side of me and lowering his face toward my neck. I thought he might whisper something nasty, but he stayed quiet. All I could hear was his ragged breathing. I put my hands up to shield myself, and when I shifted away, he seemed to snap out of it. “Answer me!” he demanded. “Why are you wearing that?” “It’s my uniform…” He stared hard, his gaze dropping to my chest. Then he let out a long breath, like he’d made up his mind. “You can’t go out there like that. No way.” His tone left no room for argument. What he did next completely threw me. He shrugged off his jacket and started unbuttoning his shirt. Everything felt like it was moving in slow motion. None of this made sense. Why would this Alpha—who clearly couldn’t stand me—start stripping in front of me in the bathroom? I saw his tattoos, his smooth tanned skin, a few old scars… and damn, he was perfect. Veins stood out on his arms, his muscles were cut and strong, and the wolf designs inked across his body looked incredible. He towered over me, his broad chest right there in front of me. He was easily the most attractive man I’d ever seen. When he finished, his shirt hung open over a thin tank top. “Take off your shirt,” he said flatly. “Excuse me?” I blinked, stunned. “I said take off your shirt.” His voice was commanding. Did he seriously want me to strip? Was this some kind of cruel joke? “I don’t…” I stammered. “That shirt doesn’t fit you,” he growled. “You’re not walking out there like that.” “It’s my uniform, and I—” Before I could finish, his hands shot toward the collar of my shirt. I tried to push him away, but in seconds he ripped the fabric open. Buttons scattered across the floor. “What the f**k?!” I cried out, my face burning. I crossed my arms over my chest fast, trying to cover myself. There I stood, half-naked in my bra, feeling exposed and freezing. I thought I might actually cry. He didn’t look away. His eyes moved over me while I did my best to hide my body. “How could you?!” I managed, voice shaky, as I met his gaze. He stayed silent. Instead, he pulled off his shirt completely and gently guided my arms into it. I kept trying to cover up as he buttoned it with unsteady fingers, all the way to the top, like he didn’t want even an inch of me showing. His body heat wrapped around me, along with a scent I couldn’t quite place. Why was he giving me his clothes? The shirt was huge on me—it fell almost like a dress. Still not satisfied, he reached for the zipper on my skirt. Oh my God. Panic surged through me. This was going too far. “Let go!” I shouted. He looked surprised but kept going. I slapped his hands away. “I’m just trying to help you!” he said, sounding almost hurt. “I don’t need your help!” I shot back. He looked annoyed but kept at it. He held me steady, unzipped the skirt a little, and tucked the oversized shirt neatly inside. His hands brushed my hips and legs as he worked. Somehow, I ended up properly dressed again. His shirt covered me way better than my old uniform had. “Why are you here?” I asked. His mouth opened like he wanted to say something, but the words wouldn’t come. I just wanted to get as far away from him as possible. I already had enough on my plate serving him and the rest of the Alphas like they were kings. “This is the women’s bathroom! You shouldn’t even be in here!” I said. But he didn’t budge. It was like his feet were glued to the floor. The moment he stepped back, I slipped past him and hurried out the door. I could finally breathe again. What the hell had just happened? I was wearing his shirt… Why would he do that? I rushed into the kitchen, heart still racing, barely able to catch my breath. “Tessy! We need more hands on the floor!” Mia called. I pulled myself together and got back to work, carrying plates back and forth. My knees felt weak every time I got near Dom’s table. He sat there in his jacket, flanked by Alpha Caine and the others. I tried to stay calm, but the bathroom scene kept replaying in my head. As soon as I approached, the whole group tensed and stared at me. “These humans are worthless…” I heard Caine mutter. My hands shook so badly that Dom’s plate clattered loudly when I set it down. I was shocked when Dom’s hand suddenly closed around my wrist, steadying me. Maybe he didn’t want to look bad in front of the others. “Thank you,” a tough-looking Alpha with long hair said. I was too nervous to even reply. Everyone in the restaurant seemed on edge, but I was the only one who really understood what they were—powerful, unpredictable, and deadly. I thought the worst was over, but then Caine deliberately knocked some glasses onto the floor. “Look at this clumsy human. So pathetic,” he sneered. A few growls followed. I dropped to my knees and carefully picked up the broken pieces so no one would get hurt. While grabbing one shard, I sliced my finger. When I stood up, I caught Dom’s expression—he almost looked sorry. But like always, neither he nor anyone else stepped in to stop it. ... “That was weird,” Mia sighed later as we changed in the bathroom. “They’re really good-looking, but super rude.” “Did they give you any trouble?” I asked, concerned. “Just some complaints about the service, but where else are they gonna eat?” She smiled. We said our goodbyes. As I gathered my things, I realized I was still wearing Dom’s shirt. I couldn’t help it—I lifted it to my nose. It smelled incredible. I had no idea what kind of cologne it was, but it was addictive. It was late by the time I headed out. I noticed the Alphas had moved into one of the private rooms we sometimes used for events. “I see you ran into that stupid human who messed up your pack,” a nasty voice drifted out. I froze. “I guess she lives here now,” Dom replied. “If she were in my pack, she’d already be dead,” someone named Cainegrowled. “Every pack handles things their own way,” another Alpha said—sounded like the long-haired one. There were a few snorts, then silence. But Caine kept pushing. “Was it just me, or did that chubby girl smell like you?” “She… asked me for help. That’s why my scent is on her,” Dom answered. “She definitely needs help,” Caine said mockingly. “But we’ve got bigger problems—like the rogue attacks and t he Council meeting. Right?” I hurried toward the exit, almost there when I heard it. “Tessa…” I turned around. It was Dom.
