Controlled Chaos

Three weeks before the wedding, everything went wrong.

Not catastrophically, Just enough.

The lighting company had a scheduling issue. The custom cords for the handfasting were delayed. A section of fencing needed emergency repair. The weather forecast predicted rain then sunshine then thunderstorms then rain again.

Meanwhile, her consulting company landed the largest contract in its history. A deal big enough to completely change the trajectory of the business. The kind of opportunity she’d dreamed about. The kind that should have made her ecstatic.

Instead she found herself sitting in her office at ten o’clock at night staring at spreadsheets and wedding checklists.

Overwhelmed, again.

The old version of her would have tried to carry everything herself. This version, heard footsteps in the hallway.

Then his voice.

“You’re doing it again.”

She looked up.

“What?”

“Trying to carry the whole world.”

He handed her a cup of coffee.

Then sat beside her. The man who once struggled to delegate at his shop now had a management team he trusted. The woman who once believed asking for help was weakness now had employees supporting her company.

Growth had changed both of them, not because they became stronger but because they finally learned they didn’t have to be strong alone.

“We’ve got this,” he said.

She smiled.

“We do?”

He nodded.

“We always do.”

And somehow, that was enough.

At the shop, business was booming. What started as a successful local business had become something larger.

Reputation, referrals, partnerships and expansion.

For the first time in years, he wasn’t spending every waking hour turning wrenches. He was leading, teaching and building something sustainable.

One afternoon he stood in the shop watching his team handle a project without him.

A younger technician approached.

“You okay?”

He laughed.

“Yeah.”

“You’ve been standing there smiling.”

His eyes drifted toward the property visible in the distance, toward the home waiting for him and the future.

“I’ve got a lot to be grateful for.”
