Lily's pov
The first week of the arrangement blurred into a dangerous rhythm. Brandon’s world was a machine of luxury and control, and I was learning to move inside it without tripping the wires.
Tonight, we were in his private lounge at one of his exclusive clubs. Dim lighting, leather booths, and the low hum of power deals disguised as casual drinks.
“You’re quiet tonight,” Brandon said, pouring me another glass of wine. His dark eyes pinned me across the table. “That’s new. Usually you challenge every word I say.”
I smiled my practiced smile that didn’t usually reach my eyes. “Maybe I’m saving my energy for better arguments. Or maybe I’m wondering why a man like you needs an arrangement instead of just taking what he wants.”
He leaned forward, voice low and rough. “Because taking implies force. I prefer mutual benefit. You get access to everything my name opens while I get the whole of you. Exclusive, available and real. No games, Lilly. Tell me you’re not playing one.”
My pulse spiked and the old vow throbbed in my chest reminding me that I was here to become dangerous and use him.
But his attentiveness was cracking me open. “Real? That’s rich coming from you. You assign guards to watch me when I leave your penthouse. Don’t think I haven’t noticed.”
“Protection,” he corrected, reaching across to trace a finger along my wrist. The touch sent unwelcome heat through me. “My world has teeth, Lilly. You matter now and that makes you a target. Tell me about your past. The real version, not the polished one you feed me.”
I pulled my hand back slightly. “Why dig? This is supposed to be simple. s*x, company, convenience.”
“Nothing with you feels simple.” His gaze sharpened. “You flinch when I ask about your family. You deflect every time I mention your old job. What broke you, Lilly? I need to know who I’m letting in.”
The question hit like a scalpel. I forced a laugh. “You want honesty? Fine. People leave when s**t gets hard. My fiancé left, family became distant and my job? I walked away before they could fire me. Happy now? Or do you need blood samples too?”
He studied me, unblinking. “I don’t need samples. I need trust. You’re slipping past defenses I built for a reason. That scares me more than rivals.”
Before I could respond, his phone buzzed. He glanced at it, jaw tightening. “Stay here. Marcus has something.”
Marcus Webb appeared moments later. Tall and efficient with eyes like a hawk. “Boss. We have movement. A rival, Kane is probing your holdings.”
Brandon stood, pulling me up with him. “Lilly, this is Marcus. My head of intelligence. Marcus, Lilly stays in the loop tonight.”
Marcus nodded curtly. “Pleasure. Ma’am, you should know Kane’s men have been asking about you specifically.”
“About me?” I froze. This wasn’t part of my plan. “Why would some rival care about your… arrangement?”
Brandon’s arm slid possessively around my waist. “Because they see what I see. You’re not just a pretty face anymore. You’re with me. Tell her the rest, Marcus.”
Marcus leaned in. “Kane’s been spreading whispers. Claims he has dirt on new associates. He wants leverage and we've shut it down, but he’s escalating.”
My mind raced. Leverage. If Kane dug into my hospital records… No. I couldn’t let that happen.
Later, back in the penthouse, the tension boiled over. Brandon poured drinks, but his movements were sharp.
“Talk to me,” he demanded. “You went pale when Marcus mentioned leverage. What aren’t you telling me?”
I stepped close, pressing my body against his, using touch as deflection. “Nothing. I’m fine. This is your world, not mine. But if I’m a target now, maybe this arrangement needs rules. Real ones.”
He cupped my face, thumbs brushing my cheeks. “Rules? You’re already breaking every one I set for myself. Last night, when you whispered my name… that wasn’t a performance. Admit it.”
“It wasn’t,” I breathed, the honesty slipping out before I could stop it. “You make me forget why I started this. But Brandon, your control and your secrets… they scare me too. What if I’m not strong enough for your shadows?”
“You are.” He kissed me hard, possessive. “I’ve watched you. The way you study everyone. The tenderness you hide when you think I’m asleep. You’re not just surviving me. You’re matching me. Stay tonight. Let me show you what protection really means.”
We moved to the bedroom, clothes shedding in heated dialogue between kisses.
“Tell me what you want,” he growled against my skin.
“You,” I gasped. “But not just your body. The real you. The one who absorbs losses to protect his people. I heard about that deal last week. The quiet one where you took the hit.”
He paused, eyes searching mine. “You’re digging too. Good. That means you care. But Lilly, if Kane comes at you…”
“Let him,” I whispered, pulling him closer. “I’ve survived worse than billionaires with grudges.”
The night deepened our connection. Words and touches blended until I almost believed the performance was gone.
Almost.
The next evening, Kane’s hit came like a freight train.
We were at a private dinner in Brandon’s compound when Kane’s man appeared. Uninvited, bold. Security let him through just far enough for a message.
“Mr. Richmond,” the man sneered, eyes flicking to me. “Kane sends regards. And a warning. Your new toy has a interesting medical history. HIV scare six months back? Fiancé bolted. Job gone. She’s damaged goods, playing you for access. Kane has the full file. Walk away, or we make it public.”
The room went ice-cold. My blood turned to lead.
Brandon’s hand tightened on my shoulder, but his voice stayed deadly calm. “You came into my house to threaten her? Big mistake.”
I stepped forward, heart pounding. “You’re so dumb to think you can threaten me when you know nothing about me. Try something else.” I said coldly, almost too cold for what I was going for.
The man laughed. “Ask her yourself. Hospital records don’t lie. She’s been a walking time bomb since the diagnosis. Perfect leverage.”
Security dragged him out, but the damage was done. Brandon turned to me slowly, eyes unreadable.
“Lilly. Is there something you need to tell me? Now.”
My mind spun. The diagnosis lingered. The vow. The way I’d targeted him. This was the moment it could all explode. But telling him everything would end us before we began.
“Brandon,” I said, voice calm despite how my control was unraveling from the inside. “You have nothing to be worried about. And if they want to try, let them come. I admit that there was a time I thought my life was over but I don't stay down Brandon. Not for long. And I didn’t come to you because of that. Not entirely.”
His jaw clenched. “What happened when you thought your life was over? And why do you keep hiding it even after I asked for honesty?”
His words lingered in the room, the silence dragging.
Marcus appeared in the doorway. “Boss. Preliminary report on Lilly have just been updated. The hospital visit matches. Full details incoming.”
Brandon didn’t look away from me. “Leave us.”
Marcus exited. The silence stretched.
“You’re not the only one with secrets,” I pressed without making it sound desperate. “But this… us… became real. Don’t let Kane twist it.”
He pulled me close, but his grip was steel. “Real? Or strategic? I protect what’s mine, Lilly. But if you’re using me…”
“I’m not,” I lied, tears stinging my eyes for the first time in months. Inside, I was trying hard to keep it together. How do I get the vengeance I need with the terrifying love growing despite everything.
His phone rang and Kane’s number became visible on the screen.
Brandon answered on speaker.
“Richmond. Nice toy. Break her, or I will.”
Brandon’s voice went lethal. “Touch her and your entire operation burns. She’s under my protection. Test me.”
He hung up, then turned to me. “We handle this together. But Lilly… no more lies ever. Understand?”
I nodded, but inside, panic clawed. The rival threat had forced us closer, exposing cracks and my original plan was crumbling under real feelings.
Brandon expression shifted to something darker. “Bedroom. Now. We’re not done talking.”
But as I followed him, heart racing, I knew the real storm was just beginning. One wrong word, and everything I’d built on lies would come crashing down taking this fragile, obsessive connection with it.
And somewhere in the shadows, Kane was already planning his next move.
