Chapter 8: Unraveling Secrets
The days that followed their walk through London were a mix of chaos and clarity. Zayan and Aria had stepped into a new territory, one neither of them had ever ventured into before. The pull between them was undeniable, but the questions, the doubts, they lingered like shadows, threatening to obscure the fragile connection they had begun to build.
Aria knew that Zayan was a man of secrets. It was a truth she had sensed from the beginning, buried beneath the layers of his power and control. But as their relationship deepened, so too did her awareness that there was much more to Zayan Malik than he was willing to share. His past — whatever it was — seemed to haunt him in ways she couldn’t quite understand.
And yet, with every passing day, her feelings for him grew stronger. There were moments of tenderness between them, moments when they would laugh, when their conversations would flow effortlessly, and when the world outside their bubble seemed to disappear. But there were also moments of silence, when Zayan would retreat into himself, his eyes shadowed, his mind clearly elsewhere.
It was on one of these days, a few weeks after their conversation in the streets of London, that Aria finally confronted him. She had been patient, giving him space, but the weight of his secrecy was starting to take its toll.
She stood in front of Zayan’s office, her hands trembling slightly. She had never felt this nervous about confronting anyone before, but Zayan was different. She knew that whatever happened next would change everything.
Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the door, her heart racing.
“Come in,” Zayan’s deep voice called from the other side.
Aria stepped into the sleek, minimalist office. Zayan was seated at his desk, his back turned to her, but she could see the way his posture stiffened as soon as she entered.
“Aria,” he greeted, his voice smooth, though there was an edge to it. “What’s on your mind?”
She didn’t beat around the bush. “I need to ask you something, Zayan.”
He looked up at her, his dark eyes meeting hers, and for a moment, Aria could see the guard he always kept up falter. “What is it?”
Aria walked closer, her feet echoing in the quiet room. “What are you hiding from me?” she asked, her voice firm, though the vulnerability in her chest made it hard to keep it steady.
Zayan’s expression didn’t change, but something flickered in his eyes — something that made Aria’s breath catch. “I’m not hiding anything,” he said, his voice controlled, as always. But the words felt hollow.
“Don’t lie to me,” she shot back, her frustration bubbling up. “I know you, Zayan. You’re not just this perfect, cold CEO. There’s more to you. You’ve been pulling away from me for weeks. You act like you want this, like you want us, but there’s a wall between us, and it’s not just because of your job.”
Zayan stood up, his movement swift and precise, his gaze never leaving hers. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and in that moment, Aria couldn’t shake the feeling that he was a man trapped in his own mind, a man locked away behind his own walls.
“I told you before, Aria,” he said, his voice low. “I don’t have the answers. I don’t know what this is, or where it’s going. But I can’t give you everything. I can’t be everything you want me to be.”
“Then stop pretending,” Aria snapped, her eyes blazing. “Stop pretending that we’re just two people casually spending time together. I’m not blind, Zayan. I see the way you look at me. I see how you pull back when things get too real. And I can’t do this anymore. I can’t be with someone who can’t let me in.”
The words hung in the air between them, heavy with truth. Zayan was silent for a long moment, his eyes darkening with something unreadable.
“I never meant for you to feel that way,” he said quietly. “I never meant to hurt you.”
Aria shook her head. “It’s not about you hurting me. It’s about you hiding who you really are. I don’t want to be kept at arm’s length anymore. If we’re going to do this, if we’re going to keep going, then you need to be honest with me. No more secrets.”
Zayan took a deep breath, his hands clenched at his sides. “I’ve never been able to share my past, Aria. It’s not just about me. It’s about the people around me. The people I’ve lost. If you want to know everything about me, then you have to understand that it’s not a simple story. It’s complicated.”
Aria’s heart softened, but the frustration was still there. “I don’t care about the complications, Zayan. I care about you. But I can’t care for someone who keeps pulling away every time things get real.”
Zayan stepped forward, closing the distance between them. For a moment, there was nothing but the soft thrum of her heartbeat and the tension in the air.
“Aria,” he said softly, his hand reaching out to touch her cheek. “I’m not good at this. I’ve never been good at letting anyone in. But I want to try. I want to be with you. I just need you to be patient with me.”
Aria looked up at him, her eyes searching his face. The warmth of his touch was still there, but the shadows in his gaze were undeniable. There was so much he wasn’t telling her, and that uncertainty gnawed at her insides.
“Zayan, I don’t know if I can keep waiting for you to open up,” she said quietly, her voice breaking slightly. “I need something real. I need you to let me in.”
For a long moment, Zayan didn’t say anything. Then, in the silence that followed, he took a deep breath and nodded.
“I’ll tell you everything. But not today. I can’t do it all at once.” His voice was rough, the weight of his words heavier than anything he had said before. “But I will. I’ll tell you when I’m ready.”
Aria nodded slowly, her heart heavy with a mixture of hope and uncertainty. “I can wait. But don’t make me wait forever.”
Zayan’s eyes softened, and for the first time, she saw a crack in his armor. “I won’t.”
As they stood there, inches apart, the unspoken promise between them hung in the air. The storm was still brewing, but for the first time, Aria felt like they were standing together, ready to face whatever came next.
