CHAPTER TEN Lindsey could hardly remember the last time he’d been on a picnic. Hadn’t his elementary school class gone on one when he was in the third or fourth grade? Mother was beside herself with worry, went to the city park and hovered watchfully the whole time. Lindsey had been too young to understand her emotional state then, but he’d been old enough to be humiliated by her presence. He remembered the picnic as taking place on a hot day just before the end of the school year. It must have been in May, maybe June. This picnic was taking place on a pleasant March day, and it would involve a trip no farther than Sonoma Country.
