The Shadow Seige

The walls of the Luna Suite felt like they were closing in. Killian had locked the door, but he forgot one thing: I wasn't an Omega anymore. I was a conductor of the sun’s raw energy. I stood in the center of the room, my palms facing the heavy oak door. I didn't need a key. I focused on the molecules of the wood, imagining them vibrating, heating, and finally... combusting. With a soft whoosh, the lock melted into liquid metal. The door creaked open. I stepped into the hallway, but I didn't get far. Two of Killian’s elite guards stood there, their eyes wide. "Alpha’s orders, Elara. You stay in the room." "The Alpha's orders don't apply to a Queen," I said. Before they could reach for their tasers, the windows at the end of the hallway shattered. It wasn't an explosion. It was as if the night itself had reached in and shredded the glass. Tendrils of living shadow poured through the frames, thick and suffocating. The temperature in the hallway dropped forty degrees. I knew that scent. Mint and cold leather. Ryker. "Intruders!" one guard screamed, but a spike of solid darkness erupted from the floor, pinning his sleeve to the wall. Out of the swirling shadows stepped Ryker. He looked like a god of death. His violet eyes were no longer calm; they were swirling vortices of rage. Behind him, three of his Night-Star warriors materialized from the gloom, their claws out. "I told you I would burn the world to the ground if they touched you," Ryker growled, his gaze finding mine. In one stride, he was across the hall, his hands framing my face. "Are you hurt? Did he touch you?" "I'm fine, Ryker," I breathed, my heart leaping at the sight of him. "But we have to go. Killian is calling the entire pack. He won't let us leave the territory." "He doesn't have a choice," Ryker said, his voice dropping an octave. Suddenly, the house shook. A howl—raw, primal, and filled with Alpha command—echoed from the floor below. Killian had shifted. We ran toward the grand staircase. Below us, the foyer was a battlefield. Killian, in his massive gray wolf form, was tearing through the shadows, his teeth bared at Ryker’s men. He looked up, his golden wolf eyes locking onto me, and then onto Ryker’s hand on my arm. The gray wolf let out a sound of pure agony and fury. He lunged up the stairs, his claws digging into the expensive carpet. "Elara, get behind me!" Ryker commanded, his own body beginning to ripple as his wolf pushed to the surface. "No," I said, stepping forward. I felt the Solaris fire surging in my veins, more powerful than ever because for the first time, I wasn't fighting for survival—I was fighting for the man I loved. "This is my home to burn, Ryker. Let me do it." I raised both hands. The air around me began to glow white-hot. "Killian!" I shouted. The gray wolf paused, snarling. "You wanted my power?" I asked, my voice vibrating with the strength of a thousand suns. "Here it is!" I unleashed a wave of solar fire. It didn't burn the house—I controlled it too well for that—but it created a wall of blinding, searing heat between us and the Blood-Moon pack. The light was so intense that the wolves, with their sensitive night-vision, fell back, howling in pain and blindness. In the confusion, Ryker grabbed me. "Now!" We leaped from the second-floor balcony, the shadows catching us like a soft velvet cushion before we hit the ground. Ryker’s black SUV was idling at the gate, the engine roaring. As we sped away, I looked back. The Blood-Moon pack house was silhouetted against the light of my fire. Killian stood on the lawn, shifted back into his human form, naked and defeated. He was screaming my name, but the sound was drowned out by the wind. Ryker reached over, taking my hand in his. His skin was cool, mine was hot, and where we touched, a perfect balance was found. "You did it, Elara," he whispered. "The twenty-four hours aren't over, but you just broke the bond yourself. You didn't need the Goddess. You chose." "I chose you," I said, leaning my head on his shoulder. But as the lights of the Blood-Moon faded in the distance, a dark thought crossed my mind. Killian wouldn't stop. And the Council of Elders wouldn't let a Solaris Queen run free with a Shadow King. The real war was just beginning.
