The Ghost of a Bond

Killian POV The Alpha’s office was silent, but the air inside felt like it was vibrating with a deadly frequency. I sat behind my mahogany desk, staring at the empty glass of whiskey in my hand. For two days, I hadn't slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her. Not the soot-covered girl who scrubbed my floors, but the radiant, golden Goddess who had looked at me with such cold, beautiful indifference. She isn’t yours anymore, my wolf, Fenris, snarled in the back of my mind. His voice was a ragged edge of pain. You threw away the sun, and now we are freezing in the dark. "Shut up," I hissed at the empty room. A soft knock at the door broke my concentration. Sienna stepped in, wearing a sheer silk robe that would have driven me mad a week ago. Now, it just felt... desperate. "Killian, baby," she cooed, walking toward me and placing her hands on my shoulders. "The pack is talking. They saw what happened at the border. They’re scared, and they’re confused. You need to tell them that Elara is just a Rogue using cheap Night-Star tricks." I pulled away from her touch, the scent of her perfume—heavy and floral—making my stomach turn. It wasn't sandalwood. It wasn't rain. "She wasn't using tricks, Sienna," I said, my voice like gravel. "You saw the light. You felt the power. That was the Solaris flame." Sienna’s face twisted with jealousy, her lips curling into a sneer. "Even if it was, she’s still just a nameless Omega. She’s probably sleeping with Ryker Night-Star to keep his protection. You should be happy she's gone! Now we can focus on our ceremony." "GET OUT." The Alpha command ripped from my throat, raw and violent. The windows in the office rattled, and Sienna stumbled back, her face pale with shock. She had never seen me like this. "Killian..." "I said get out!" I roared, standing up and slamming my fists onto the desk. She scrambled out of the room, sobbing, but I didn't care. I couldn't breathe. The rejection mark on my own neck was itching—a sympathetic phantom pain that shouldn't exist. According to the laws of the Goddess, a rejection was final. The bond was supposed to be dead. But mine was screaming. The door opened again, but this time it was Marcus, my Beta. He didn't look scared; he looked grave. He held a scroll with the silver wax seal of the Council. "It’s official, Alpha," Marcus said, placing the scroll on the desk. "The Trial of the Moon’s Mirror is set for the full moon. The Neutral Territory is being prepared." I grabbed the scroll, my eyes scanning the elegant script. "The Council has called for three witnesses," Marcus continued. "The High Priestess, King Ryker... and you." My heart hammered against my ribs. "Why me?" "Because you are the one who rejected her. If the silver proves she is an abomination, you are the one tasked with the execution. But..." Marcus hesitated. "If she survives, and the silver clears her soul, the law states that the first mate has twenty-four hours to 'reclaim' the bond if the second bond hasn't been finalized." A spark of hope, dark and dangerous, flared in my chest. "Reclaim the bond," I whispered. "Killian, don't," Marcus warned. "The Night-Star King will go to war for her. And Elara... she hates you. You saw her eyes. She wanted to burn you where you stood." "She’s angry," I argued, more to myself than to him. "She’s hurt. I’ll make her understand. I’ll give her the title she deserves. I’ll make her the most powerful Luna in history. She just needs to realize that Ryker is using her for her blood." I looked out the window toward the jagged peaks of the Night-Star Citadel. Somewhere up there, she was sleeping in a bed that wasn't mine. She was laughing with a man who wasn't me. "She is the sun," I whispered, my hand clenching into a fist. "And the sun belongs to the Blood-Moon. I’m going to that trial, Marcus. And I’m not coming home without my mate."
