The Pregnancy Factor

Annabelle's POV The heavy silence that followed Joel’s departure stayed in the room long after the doors clicked shut. I lay frozen on the sheets, my mind a chaotic battlefield of fear, betrayal, and a fierce, maternal panic. Joel was completely insane. He had erased my existence with a single phone call, and now he was keeping me locked away in here. But as terrifying as his obsession was, a far greater terror gripped my soul. My hand trembled as I pressed it against my lower stomach. The car crash and the violent impact I’d suffered. Was my baby okay? “Please, please be okay,” I whispered into the empty room, a tear slipping down my cheek as I worried for my child. I didn't care about my scratched skin or my bruised ribs. I cared about the tiny, innocent miracle growing inside me. I needed to know if my baby had survived the trauma of tonight. And I couldn't get a proper answer from Joel’s vague reassurances. I needed a medical professional. An hour later, when a young maid entered the room to place a tray of untouched food on the nightstand, I grabbed her arm. “Please,” I begged, my voice cracking. “Tell Joel I need a doctor. A private doctor. Tell him I’m in pain. If he really wants to keep me alive, he needs to send someone right now.” The maid looked at me with wide, fearful eyes before nodding quickly and scurrying out. It didn't take long before the doors opened again. Joel walked in, his expression unreadable, followed by an older man carrying a professional medical black bag. The doctor looked highly sophisticated, the kind of elite private physician only billions of dollars could buy. “You complained of pain, Annabelle,” Joel said, his deep voice slicing through the room as he stood at the foot of the bed, crossing his arms. He loomed like a dark shadow, watching my every move. “Dr. Evans is the best in the state. He will examine you.” Dr. Evans gave a polite, professional nod, setting his bag down on a nearby chair. “Good evening, ma'am. Where exactly does it hurt? Is it the ribs, or perhaps a delayed concussion?” I swallowed hard, my eyes flickering to Joel’s imposing figure, then back to the doctor. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. I couldn't hide it anymore. If there was something wrong with my baby, I needed help immediately. “Doctor...” My voice shook, but I forced the words out. “I don't care about my ribs. I need you to check on my baby. I was in a car accident tonight, and I need to know if the fetus is safe.” The room instantly plunged into a suffocating, freezing silence. Dr. Evans blinked in surprise, shifting his gaze slightly toward his employer. “A fetus? You're pregnant, ma'am?” “Yes,” I choked out, keeping my hand firmly over my stomach. “I’m seven weeks along now. Please, do you have a portable ultrasound? Can you check?” I didn't look at Joel, but I could feel the exact second the air in the room completely shifted. The atmosphere became dangerously heavy, suffocatingly tense. A terrifying, dark aura began to bleed off the man standing at the foot of the bed. “Doctor,” Joel’s voice cut through the silence. It wasn't loud, but it was a low, vibrating growl that made the glass chandelier above us rattle. “Examine her. Now.” Dr. Evans scrambled to pull out his equipment, his professional composure cracking under Joel’s terrifying pressure. For the next ten minutes, the room was filled with the quiet, rhythmic sounds of the medical checkup. I barely felt the cold gel on my stomach or the probe moving across my skin. My eyes were locked on the small, portable monitor. Then, a faint, rapid, beautiful sound filled the quiet room. Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump. “The heartbeat is strong, ma'am,” Dr. Evans breathed, sounding visibly relieved. “The amniotic sac is intact. The baby survived the impact completely uninjured. It’s a miracle, considering the force of the crash.” A sob of pure joy escaped my lips. I closed my eyes, burying my face in my hands as tears of gratitude poured down my face. My baby was alive. My beautiful, miracle baby was safe. “Leave us,” Joel ordered flatly. Dr. Evans didn't need to be told twice. He packed his equipment with frantic speed, bowed slightly, and practically bolted out of the bedroom, closing the double doors behind him. The moment the doors clicked shut, the joy in my chest died, replaced by a cold, sharp dread. I slowly opened my eyes and looked up. Joel hadn't moved an inch from the foot of the bed, but he looked completely unrecognizable. The intense, reverent gentleness he had shown me earlier was entirely gone. His sharp jaw was clenched so tightly the muscles jumped, and his gray eyes had turned into two twin vortexes of pure, apocalyptic fury. His hands were curled into tight fists at his sides, his knuckles stark white. “Dylan’s child,” Joel murmured, the name coming out of his mouth like a poisonous curse. “Joel, please—” “You were carrying his child!” Joel suddenly roared, the sheer force of his voice making me flinch and pull the duvet up to my chest. He took two massive, aggressive steps forward, looming over the bed like a demon unleashed. “The bastard betrayed you! He humiliated you, called you defective, threw you out into a freezing storm for my pathetic sister—and you are carrying his heir?!” “I didn't know until today!” I screamed back, tears flashing in my eyes. “I found out right before I walked into that bedroom! I was going to tell him, but then I saw them! This baby has nothing to do with him anymore! It's my baby!” Joel lunged forward, placing his hands on either side of my knees, pinning me with his shadow. His face was just inches from mine, his breathing ragged, his chest heaving with a violent, dangerous rage. I could see the raw conflict tearing him apart inside. His obsession, his years of waiting for me, had just been slapped in the face by the ultimate tie to the man he despised. “It is his blood, Annabelle!” Joel hissed, his gray eyes flashing with a terrifying, wild light. “Every time I look at your stomach, I am reminded of the fact that he touched you! That he put his seed inside you while I was forced to watch from the shadows!” “Then let me go!” I cried out, pushing against his shoulders. “If my baby disgusts you so much, open those damn doors and let me leave! I will disappear! You'll never have to see me or this child again!” “No!” Joel barked, his iron grip suddenly snapping around my wrists, pinning them down onto the mattress. The fury in his eyes suddenly twisted, the dark, suffocating obsession overriding his anger in a split second. The possessive mania returned tenfold, darker and more unhinged than before. “You are never leaving this house, Annabelle,” Joel whispered, his voice dropping to a terrifying, desperate growl. He leaned in closer, his lips almost brushing mine as he stared into my soul. “I don't care whose blood runs in that child’s veins. I don't care that it belongs to Dylan. Because from this moment on, Dylan is dead to you. And that means this baby is no longer his.” “What are you saying?” I gasped, completely terrified by the look in his eyes. “I am saying that this baby is mine now,” Joel declared, his voice dripping with an absolute, unyielding dominance that made me sweat nervously. “You will carry this child in my house. You will give birth to it under my name. I will be the only father this baby ever knows, and if Dylan ever tries to lay a finger on what is mine, I will bury him alive.” He released my wrists, his large hand moving down to hover directly over my stomach, his palm radiating an intense, protective warmth that confused and terrified me all at once. “Whether you like it or not, Annabelle,” Joel murmured, his eyes locking onto mine with a chilling promise. “You and that child belong to me. Forever.”
