Jack O"Callahan arrived in Dundalk that next morning as a man possessed. The Garda found the Kia Mini at the foot of Toberona Bridge with all its windows smashed, all tires slashed, dents and scratches all over the car, and the trunk and hood pried open with the engine torn asunder. They brought out the bloodhounds but, away from the attack scene at the crest of the drumlin, there was no trace of Siobhan Manley to be found. The Garda put out a red alert throughout the Dundalk region and the neighboring County Louth in Ulster, with a media campaign urging anyone who might have seen the missing detective to notify the police or Army immediately.
