Christian came back from his meeting that evening. For once, he looked relaxed. Before long, a notification went out granting everybody two paid days off, and the whole office lost it.
"I love our boss!"
"Long live Christian!"
In the middle of the celebrating, I grabbed my bag and made a break for the elevators. Then Mom called again, frantic. "Stella! Lucas checked himself out of the hospital. He said he was going to your office to pick you up after work. Have you seen him?"
My stomach dropped. "Pick me up? Has he lost his mind?"
Right then the elevator doors slid open. Christian was standing inside.
I braced myself, stepped in, and tucked into a corner. The elevator was roomy, but the faint scent of cedar and mint on Christian somehow shrank it down to nothing. I stared blankly at his broad shoulders.
The second the elevator hit the lobby, a familiar figure launched off a sofa and came barreling at us.
"Stella!"
Lucas sprinted at me in a hospital gown, his head still wrapped in a ridiculous amount of gauze. I was about to lay into him when he skidded to a stop. His eyes slid off me and locked onto Christian, standing a step ahead.
The instant he saw Christian, his whole face lit up.
"Holy crap—Christian!"
Lucas screamed it loud enough for the whole lobby to hear, then threw himself at Christian and locked him in a bear hug. Before Christian could react, Lucas went up on his toes and planted a loud kiss on his cheek.
Smack.
It echoed through the dead-silent lobby of Mercer Tech. Dozens of employees outside the elevator froze.
My brain flatlined.
