Chapter 5: Falling Into the Gaps

1148 Words
The summer air has a way of turning the mundane into something unforgettable. Like the way the sea breeze pushes through the trees, the scent of saltwater blending with the warmth of the sand beneath our feet. But here, in this small town that holds more memories than I can count, everything feels like it's changing. And with it, so are the people I care about. “Hey, Elara, you okay?” Sky's voice cuts through the fog of my thoughts, pulling me back to the present. He's always good at that, always in tune with what I'm feeling, even when I don't say a word. He’s not just my best friend; he's the one person who sees the cracks in my mask. Sky stands tall, his shaggy hair falling just over his eyes, his grin teasing and easy. His laid-back nature has always made him approachable, the kind of guy who can make anyone laugh in an instant, yet I’ve never known him to shy away from deeper conversations when needed. But today, there’s a hint of concern beneath his usual coolness. I pull my knees to my chest and try to offer him a smile. "Yeah, just thinking." Sky sits down beside me, his usual carefree grin in place, but I can see the way his eyes soften when he looks at me. He knows there's more going on under the surface. But instead of asking questions, he changes the subject to something lighter, something we both need right now. “So, Carter's throwing another one of his infamous bonfires this weekend,” he says, raising an eyebrow. "You in?" I nod, though my mind drifts to Carter and how his presence has started to feel like the sun on a cloudless day. Bright, comforting, and so easy to be around. As much as I try to push away the weight of Ethan’s sudden distance, it lingers. Every time I see him, there’s a coldness in his gaze that doesn’t match the warmth he used to offer so freely. The storm he was for me now feels like an unreachable thundercloud, and I don't know how to weather it. The day of the bonfire comes faster than I expect. Carter's house, the one that's a little too big for one person but feels just right when we're all there, is already buzzing with life. People are gathered in small groups, laughter and music filling the air. I walk into the backyard where the fire pit has been set up. The crackling fire casts a warm glow across the gathering, and I spot Carter immediately. The first thing that stands out about Carter is his laugh it’s big and contagious, like the way sunlight spills over the horizon in the morning. With his sandy blond hair, a little tousled from the wind, and a devil-may-care attitude, he’s the kind of guy you’d expect to be the life of every party. But there’s more to him than meets the eye, a hidden depth I’ve yet to fully understand. "You're here," Carter greets me with a smile that feels like sunshine, wrapping me in his arms for a quick hug. It's easy with him, always has been. "You've been planning this for days, huh?" I tease, pulling back to see the familiar glint in his eyes. "Wouldn't be a proper summer without a bonfire, right?" he says, offering me a cup of something sweet-smelling. "Want some punch? Sky made it. It's... probably a little strong." I take it from him, raising an eyebrow. “We’ll see how strong it really is.” I look around, scanning the crowd. There’s a buzz of excitement, but a quiet tension sits in the air too. Ethan isn’t here yet. And for a moment, I wonder if he even will show up. Just as I think about turning my attention elsewhere, I catch a glimpse of him standing near the edge of the firelight, his gaze fixed on something far off. Ethan. There’s a weight in the air whenever he’s around, like the stillness before a storm breaks. Tall, dark, and brooding, Ethan has always been hard to read. His angular jawline and intense eyes usually make him the center of attention, though he’s never been one to seek it out. There’s an air of mystery around him, a quiet magnetism that pulls you in without saying a word. But lately, that magnetism feels more like a force pulling us apart, and I don’t know how to get back to what we once had. I don’t know how to act around him anymore. We’re both lost in the aftermath of whatever happened between us. His silence has become deafening, and the once-easy closeness we shared is now a distant memory. Sky notices my hesitation, following my gaze before looking back at me with a knowing look. “You gonna talk to him?” I don’t know. But before I can answer, Carter claps me on the shoulder and steers me into the group. “Come on, Elara. Let’s enjoy the night.” But even as I try to lose myself in the laughter and chatter, my heart keeps beating faster every time I glance at Ethan. It’s like he’s a magnet pulling me in, and yet, every time I try to approach, there’s a distance that wasn’t there before. The night wears on, the bonfire crackling as we tell stories, sing songs, and pass around mugs of cider. But through it all, I can’t shake the feeling that something is slipping away from me, something I’m not sure I’m ready to lose. Carter is with me, laughing by my side, but my mind keeps drifting back to Ethan. The storm he was has left a hole in me that I don’t know how to fill. Later, when the fire has dwindled to embers, I find myself standing near the water's edge, staring at the horizon. I can feel the pull of the ocean, the quiet rhythm of the waves. It’s always been a place where I could think, where everything felt clearer. And then, I feel him before I see him. Ethan. He steps up beside me, his presence like the calm before the storm. I don’t know what to say. I’ve spent so much time wondering why he’s been pulling away, but now, with him standing here, it feels too heavy to ask. "I thought you'd be gone by now," I finally say, my voice barely above a whisper. He doesn’t answer right away. Instead, he just looks at me, his eyes shadowed in the dim light. “I’m not going anywhere, Elara.” The words hang in the air, thick with the tension that’s been building between us. But instead of pushing him further, I find myself taking a step closer, the pull of everything unspoken between us stronger than ever.
