The bear, a beast of pure strength, wouldn't even flinch if I struck it with a stick. Its massive body would simply absorb the blow. A knife wouldn't do much either, unless it pierced its head. That thick fur would deflect most of the damage. But stabbing its head was nearly impossible with those huge paws guarding it. Usually, the only way to injure its head was to let it get close enough to swipe at you, leaving you crippled. I looked at the thin twigs I'd placed in the center of the pit. They looked so fragile, as if a breath could collapse them. But I knew they could bear the relatively light weight of the honeycomb. Once enough twigs formed a dense layer, enough to prevent even dry leaves from falling through, I gathered armfuls of leaves and scattered them over the twigs. I
