Bob Someone was screaming, loudly and painfully. There were sobs as well, though I could not tell whether they were coming from the same person. The sobs were less loud, a bit muffled, like a teenage girl in her school’s bathroom. Could I open my eyes? I had to. I knew this but they felt heavy, too heavy. I tried to pry them open but each time I attempted to lift my eyelids, I felt my body lose all its strength. What had they done to me? What had Jere done to me?
