Chapter 4

The young woman was strikingly beautiful, dressed in a white lace top, draped in a black asymmetric coat, with a camel scarf and a gracefully flowing, slim skirt. She radiated an air of refined artistry. "Hey, guys, let me introduce my girlfriend, He Min. She’s also from our school, an art major," said Chen Feng enthusiastically. Just then, Chen Feng stepped out from the restroom. He was quite good-looking himself—standing at about 1.8 meters, with long bangs that lent him an enigmatic, almost delicate charm. "Minmin, these are my best buddies from the dorm: Lu Yuan, Zhang Hui, and Song Chun." “Hi, nice to meet you all.” He Min greeted them with polite indifference, her tone neither warm nor cold, as she gave them a nod. “Oh, by the way, Lu Yuan, I heard you and Li Mengyao broke up?” Chen Feng let out a sigh, then chuckled and clapped Lu Yuan on the shoulder. “But don’t worry, Old Lu! Minmin and I have already arranged something special. We’re having a mixer tonight—our dorm buddies with Minmin’s roommates! And let me tell you, her roommates are all stunners. It’s time for you guys to bring your A-game, alright? Hahaha!” “Really?!” Zhang Hui and Song Chun couldn’t hide their excitement. Art department girls—definitely high standards, they thought. But once the initial thrill settled, they both began to worry. They were just average guys, far from handsome or wealthy, and they had no luck even with regular girls. How could they impress these art majors? “Okay, the place is all set: Dongli Bar. Let’s get ready and head over. Minmin, are your roommates on their way?” Chen Feng asked. He Min nodded, “I just got a message from Jiu’er; they’re already there.” She looked over at Lu Yuan and his friends. “You three should change into something nicer. Wear your best outfits. Chen Feng and I will wait outside.” “Come on, brothers, let’s go!” Chen Feng winked and led He Min outside. They waited at the entrance to the dormitory. He Min frowned, “Chen Feng, your dorm friends are... a bit too plain, aren’t they? Aside from Lu Yuan, who has a certain charm, but his clothes are just too shabby. The other two are downright average. My roommates won’t be interested at all. Even their stuff on the desk looked so basic—no money and no taste. And you still tried to hype them up to me.” “They’re really good guys, especially Lu Yuan. You have no idea how well he treated Li Mengyao. He worked a part-time job for over a month to earn three thousand yuan just to buy her a new phone,” Chen Feng explained. “How naive. And still got dumped?” He Min scoffed, rolling her eyes. “But so what? Jiu’er alone spends three thousand on one set of makeup. And she’s got a sharp tongue—if she looks down on them, they’ll be humiliated. Your friends are just not in the same league as my roommates.” “What should we do?” Chen Feng started to waver under his girlfriend’s assessment. He truly wanted his friends to have a good time but didn’t want them ridiculed. “But we can’t back out now; they’d definitely feel disappointed.” “Oh well, just this once.” He Min relented. Right then, Zhang Hui and Lu Yuan appeared. Zhang Hui and Song Chun had both changed into their best outfits; Song Chun was even wearing his rarely-worn, two-hundred-yuan Li-Ning sneakers. But Lu Yuan still looked the same as before. “Lu Yuan, you didn’t change?” He Min asked. “What I’m wearing is already my best.” She had no reply, sighing inwardly and hoping Jiu’er would go easy on him. At Dongli Bar, a few girls gathered around a table, chatting and laughing. They were a sight to behold—tall, well-dressed, with fair skin and beautiful features. Especially the one in the middle, Jiu’er, whose crescent-shaped eyes sparkled with charm. Every movement seemed to captivate, her slender legs drawing admiring gazes. “Jiu’er, you seemed upset this morning after you came back. What happened? Tell us!” one of the girls asked. “At first, I was annoyed, but now that I think about it, I can’t help but laugh,” Jiu’er said with a chuckle. “What happened? Tell us!” The girls were immediately intrigued, leaning in with eager curiosity. “It’s actually pretty simple. This morning, I was eating at Dicos. There was this guy sitting next to me, reading and studying hard. He was dressed shabbily, but he seemed so focused that I couldn’t help admiring him a bit. But after I stepped out to use the restroom and came back, guess what happened?” “What?” The girls’ eyes widened. “The guy had moved into my seat and was devouring what was left of my food, drinking my half-finished drink, wolfing it all down like he hadn’t eaten in days! I was totally stunned!” Jiu’er’s voice trailed off as she patted her chest, still shaken by the memory. “No way, someone like that?” “He must have been too broke to buy his own food, figured you’d left, and took the leftovers.” “Ugh, that’s so embarrassing!” “Well, I could never do that, not in a million years.” “Talk about a complete loser.” “Forget it, let’s move on. I just texted Minmin that we’re here. Chen Feng’s dormmates should be arriving soon,” Jiu’er said with a mischievous smile. “Ooh, they’re from the Management Department? Management majors must be pretty good-looking, right?” “Future CEOs, I bet! Gotta catch myself one.” “I heard management majors are rich kids too. Hope I didn’t overdo it with my makeup.” They each took out a compact mirror, adjusting every detail to perfection. At that moment, Lu Yuan and his friends arrived. “There they are!” Chen Feng said with a smile, leading the way. Zhang Hui and Song Chun looked thrilled but also nervous. “Jiu’er, Nana, Manman, we’re here!” He Min greeted her friends warmly. “Minmin, Chen Feng!” But as soon as Jiu’er and the others laid eyes on Zhang Hui and Song Chun, their initial enthusiasm faded. These two guys were just… ordinary. There was no spark of interest. “So, what were you all laughing about earlier?” He Min tried to keep the energy up, realizing the vibe was slipping. “Oh, nothing much, Jiu’er was just telling us a story from Dicos. Jiu’er, Minmin hasn’t heard it—why don’t you share?” Nana chimed in. Jiu’er recounted her story about the strange boy who’d eaten her leftovers, and everyone shared a few laughs. “Alright, everyone, let’s sit. Zhang Hui, why don’t you sit next to Chen Man, and Song Chun, you can sit beside Nana,” He Min suggested, seating Lu Yuan beside Jiu’er. After all, Jiu’er was the prettiest, with the highest standards. Among Chen Feng’s friends, Lu Yuan was at least somewhat attractive, even if his attire was unimpressive. It was the best He Min could do to avoid a complete loss of atmosphere. “Where’s the third guy?” Jiu’er asked. “Oh, Lu Yuan just stepped into the restroom. He’ll be here in a moment,” Chen Feng said. “Let’s order something! Feel free to chat and get to know each other—no need to hold back; we’re all young!” Chen Man and Nana weren’t thrilled to chat, but they made a few polite exchanges out of respect for He Min and Chen Feng. Zhang Hui and Song Chun, usually chatty and carefree, were suddenly tongue-tied and awkward around the beautiful girls. Meanwhile, Jiu’er’s attention drifted. She wasn’t interested in Zhang Hui or Song Chun. Her mind lingered on Lu Yuan, hoping he’d be the one to surprise her. Just then, Chen Feng waved excitedly, “Ah, Lu Yuan! Over here!”
