Chapter 6

A supercar, a hundred bucks. “Who are you to teach me respect? You’re Zhang Hui, right? And that Lu Yuan with you—you’re just three nobodies,” sneered the notorious “Jinling Bad Boy,” exuding arrogance. But then, arrogance often comes with power. “Jinling Bad Boy gifts a supercar!” “Jinling Bad Boy gifts a supercar!” “Jinling Bad Boy gifts a supercar!” “Jinling Bad Boy gifts a supercar!” “Jinling Bad Boy gifts a supercar!” Five in a row, totaling five hundred bucks! “Come on, Bad Boy, calm down! Who do you think you are?” cooed Yin Yi, batting her eyes at his generosity. “Li Hongfei,” replied Jinling’s infamous Bad Boy. “I knew it was him,” scoffed Song Chun. Li Hongfei was a spoiled rich kid, arrogant and well-known in Jinling. With a revolving cast of friends, he flaunted his wealth openly. “Oh, it’s you! Thank you, Li Hongfei. Mwah!” chirped Yin Yi, delighted. “Thanks for all the supercars, Fei!” “Damn, she just says ‘thanks’ to us, but for him, it’s ‘mwah’! Unreal,” Song Chun muttered, his earlier thrill fading. “Come on, it’s simple,” Zhang Hui consoled. “If you gifted fifty grand, she’d be calling you ‘hubby.’” “What’s the matter, Song Chun? Aren’t you just another loser? Try and match me if you’ve got the guts! All three of you in the dorm can try together. Get that Lu Yuan guy to join too. Come on!” taunted the Jinling Bad Boy. “Jinling Bad Boy gifts a supercar!” “Jinling Bad Boy gifts a supercar!” “Jinling Bad Boy gifts a supercar!” “Jinling Bad Boy gifts a supercar!” “Jinling Bad Boy gifts a supercar!” He rained down five more cars. “Oh, thank you, Fei! You’re the best!” Yin Yi squealed, her face alight with joy, putting on a display of coy gestures. “Fei really is amazing!” “Yeah, Fei is a genuine rich kid. Unlike us, who splurge on gifts only to skip breakfast tomorrow.” Most of the viewers were classmates, and some immediately began to flatter him. “Where’s Fei now?” asked one eager admirer. “Oh, just at the Lamborghini Lounge, chilling with some pals. You all should come sometime; plenty of young models here!” Li Hongfei replied, his words laced with swagger. [System Notice: Jinling Bad Boy has been upgraded to Stream Admin.] “Fei, I just made you admin! Help me keep things tidy,” Yin Yi said with a smile. “Sure,” Li Hongfei replied. “I’ll help with gifts when I can. It’s just a few hundred bucks, unlike some who make a fuss over gifting a measly scarf and think they’re entitled to attention. Losers hitting on goddesses? Save it!” Li Hongfei added mockingly. “Damn, he’s talking about me,” Song Chun grumbled, his face flushed. “Pfft, as if having some money makes you hot stuff!” Zhang Hui spat. They could say what they wanted, but seeing Li Hongfei and Yin Yi flirt and hearing classmates cheer him on, all Song Chun and Zhang Hui could do was seethe with envy. [Snow gifts a yacht!] “Whoa, someone sent a yacht! That’s a thousand bucks!” Song Chun exclaimed, his eyes wide. “Holy crap, who’s this Snow? Someone from our class? No way anyone’s richer than Li Hongfei!” Zhang Hui shouted. The livestream exploded with chatter. “Who’s Snow?” “A yacht? This guy is the real deal. Take me with you, boss!” “Is it someone from our class? A hidden millionaire?” “Could be Yin Yi’s boyfriend!” “No way! Yin Yi’s single!” Even Yin Yi was momentarily stunned, speechless. A yacht—a thousand bucks! “Oh my god, thank you, Snow! Thank you so much…” She stammered, looking shy. It was clear she wanted to make a good impression on Snow. [Snow gifts a yacht!] [Snow gifts a yacht!] [Snow gifts a yacht!] [Snow gifts a yacht!] [Snow gifts a yacht!] [Snow gifts a yacht!] [Snow gifts a yacht!] [Snow gifts a yacht!] [Snow gifts a yacht!] [Snow gifts a yacht!] A system alert blazed: ten yachts in a row. “Oh my god!” Zhang Hui and Song Chun leapt up. “Lu! Are you watching this? Someone just dropped ten grand!” Song Chun exclaimed. The dorm halls erupted with shouts. Everyone from Lu Yuan’s class was watching in disbelief. “He went all out—ten grand!” “I can’t believe this!” “Snow, are you in our class? Please, just tell us. I’ll follow you forever!” “No way he’s in our class. This must be Yin Yi’s friend. They’re obviously close if he’s spending this much.” “Snow… Snow, thank you! Thank you so much, Snow! I wish I could hug you!” Yin Yi’s eyes sparkled as she looked at the camera, radiating a kittenish charm, as if she were curling up just for Snow. “Yin Yi, tell us who Snow is!” “Yes, please!” “I… I don’t know! Snow, do I know you? Tell me, please. I’ll treat you to dinner!” Yin Yi was curious, too. “What? Even Yin Yi doesn’t know who Snow is?” “It’s nothing, just a small gift.” Finally, Snow replied. “I just want to say: being rich doesn’t mean much. There’s always someone wealthier. Remember, don’t look down on others just because they’re struggling.” “Well said!” Zhang Hui and Song Chun cheered, clapping. “Snow must be a true rich kid,” Zhang Hui mused, “not like that show-off Li Hongfei.” “Yeah, Snow’s my hero. His words are perfect,” Song Chun agreed. Snow’s message had rescued them, putting Li Hongfei to shame. Here Snow was, throwing down ten grand and then advising humility, while Li Hongfei boasted about his mere thousand. The livestream audience chimed in with praise. “Snow’s right on point.” “Definitely a class act. Only someone from a prominent family could say that.” “Snow must have quite the story.” Meanwhile, Li Hongfei had gone quiet. “Yin Yi, what’s going on? I heard someone sent you gifts?” Suddenly, another face appeared—a beautiful girl, though with a different appeal than Yin Yi. This girl was more like a race model, with an edge of provocative charm. “Ugh, Li Mengyao, that vixen,” Zhang Hui muttered. Yes, it was Lu Yuan’s ex, Li Mengyao. She shared a dorm with Yin Yi. She hadn’t thought much of Yin Yi’s streaming at first; after all, plenty of people streamed now. But when she overheard Yin Yi thanking someone called Snow repeatedly, she grew curious and came over. “Wow, no way, eleven yachts! Who is this?” Li Mengyao’s face twisted, torn between surprise and envy. Eleven yachts—that was over ten thousand! “Where’s my dear Snow?” Yin Yi said, tilting her head and placing her fingers on her cheeks, her voice dripping with cuteness. “Who’s Snow? Is he your friend?” asked Li Mengyao. Her assumption made sense—how else would a stranger drop that much for Yin Yi’s first stream? “No, I just met Snow,” Yin Yi replied, candidly. Wait—just met? Li Mengyao felt a rush of excitement. Was Snow just rich and foolish with his money? “Snow, are you here?” After a pause, Snow finally replied. “Yes.” “Oh, Snow, you replied! I’m so happy!” Li Mengyao clasped her hands to her chest, beaming. “Snow, if I start streaming, would you support me too?” “That vixen is hitting on Snow now!” Song Chun growled. “Lu was so smart to break up with her!” Zhang Hui agreed, fuming. The livestream remained silent for a moment. [Do you have a boyfriend?] Snow asked suddenly. “Huh?” Li Mengyao paused, then shook her head with a pure smile. “Oh, Snow, I don’t have a boyfriend. You’re too funny!” “Hey, Mengyao, why say that? You just dumped Lu Yuan and are with Du Liang now!” Yin Yi interjected, displeased. Girls were like that—always quick to call out insincerity. Annoyed by Li Mengyao’s pretense, Yin Yi spoke up, pointing out that girls rarely held true friendships. “Ah, Du Liang and I just have a ‘close relationship,’ nothing official. And as for Lu Yuan, I left that loser ages ago!” she retorted, flustered, and awkwardly handed the stream back to Yin Yi. “Snow, are you still here?” Yin Yi asked, softly. “Oh, he’s gone.” Meanwhile, in dorm 306, Lu Yuan tossed his phone aside, lying back on his bed, feeling something indescribable stir within him.
