LUSTRE
His eyes settled on me and his eyes boringly assessed my body briefly before his nose scrunched up in something akin to disgust. I needed no soothsayer to tell me he could already tell that I was human.
He didn't say anything, just continued walking till he was out of the office.
I stood there... Stupefied and I did the next thing my brain told me to do.
I followed him.
Bullying was one thing I'd never condone but what I just witnessed wasn't just bullying, it was an outright act of wickedness.
He got her sacked because she reported him for doing something bad? How? Who the hell was he that he was even capable of something like that?
Maybe if I had taken a minute to think that through, I wouldn't have done affect him and signed my death sentence in the process.
“That was rude and outrightly horrible,” my voice surprised him as I almost caught up with him in the hallway. He stopped and slowly looked back, he didn't look at me, as if I wasn't worthy enough for him to look at me and the otherwise busy hallway seemed to quieten down.
“What?” he sounded genuinely confused and my anger spiked even more.
"You'd understand that if you don't lack basic comprehension skills."
What followed after the initial loud whispers was a pin-drop silence, one that was so loud that I could hear my frantic heart beats and he slowly started to walk towards me.
I gulped.
His face was that of a dark beauty, a kind of sinful beauty that has an allurement of the dark, a kind of shocking beauty because you never expected someone to look like that and there was a sinister look in his eyes, one crazed with the need for violence and destruction and when this lips curved into a smile, it was a pure sadistic one, one that was gleaming with the prospect of wrecking havoc.
One that was gleaming with the prospect of having a new prey.
And that prey being me.
I should run away now, turn back, apologize, and do something other than the crazy retort at the tip of my tongue.
"And that would be me you're talking to?" He repeated his words slowly as he advanced toward me slowly.
"Like I said, if..."
Strong hands gripped my right shoulder and before I could make sense of what was going on, I was forced to my knees and pain exploded in all parts of my body as my knees connected with the hard floor.
"Yeah, that's more like it," he grinned down at me, the sadistic grin in his eyes not leaving, "when the likes of you want to talk to me, you do it on your f*****g knees. Now, what were you talking about?"
"You have to be kidding me. Do you have that much of a fragile ego that you have to make yourself feel better by belittling other people?"
More gasps and whispers erupted in the hallway but I didn't pay attention to them as I tried to get back to my feet but his hand held me in place and his fingers were digging into my shoulders with so much force that I was starting to feel my bones crushing.
A maniac look crossed his eyes at my words and his hold tightened on my shoulder even more.
"Looks like you've got some tongue on you, right? Why don't we start by putting that to good use?"
I was confused for a split second about what he was going about until he stuck a foot out.
"My shoes are dirty from walking around, since you don't know what to use your phone tongue for, why not use it for this?"
I looked at his shoes to see that the right pair was stained with a whitish substance, the substance he now expects me to lick off with my tongue.
He must be more deranged and delusional than I thought.
"You know what I think? I think you belong to a psychiatrist ward."
His grin only deepened, "That'll only make our relationship going forward easy," he looked away from me then to address a random male student that was the closest to us, "Hold her head down if you don't want to replace her.”
I expected the boy to call his bluff and walk away or help me but I should have known better because he did not waste time in standing up and grabbing my head and pushing it down with so much force that no matter how hard I struggled, I was no match for his strength and before I knew it, my face was colliding with his shoes and the taste of polish and something else I couldn't name exploded in my mouth.
I increased my struggle but it did not help at all, the only thing it did was to make me lick the shoe more.
Eventually, the boy let go of my head and I came up immediately for air to see him grinning widely at me.
"That should teach you enough lessons on how to use your tongue whenever you're in my presence, but in case that isn't enough then, I'll have to do this."
He reached out and before I could make sense of what he was doing, he reached out to a passing cleaner, collected the cleaning bucket, and emptied the contents on me.
I gasped as the cold dirty water soaked my entire body, my hair, shirt, skirt, socks, shoes, and all and o started shivering from the coldness.
"That's it," he bent to my level and grabbed my name tag, "Lustre Bell, welcome to Haling Prep or should I say," a sadistic predatory look that chilled my bones to the ice entered his eyes, "welcome to your hell."
He winked at me as he stood up and the bell went off at the same time and the Hallway became lively once again as students went on with their business and they all started walking to their classes.
No one paid attention to me, no one offered me a helping hand as I remained there, drenched to the bones, on that cold floor, still unable to process and believe everything that just happened.
********
A couple of minutes later, I was in the bathroom still shaking and reeling from what happened. I had to wash and dry my clothes but there was nothing to change into and for minutes, I just stood in front of the mirror, staring at my drenched body, at the hair sticking to my forehead and neck and I felt an intense urge to cry but I wasn't going to cry, I wasn't going to allow this to break me.
I was bigger than this, stronger than this.
The door to the bathroom suddenly opened and I instinctively made to hide behind it because I didn't want to get caught up with some bully girls in the bathroom when I was not in the right frame of mind but the girl that entered didn't look like a bully.
Not like bullies will write it on their foreheads.
But this girl looked soft and fragile and delicate as if she couldn't hurt a fly. She looked like someone who just wanted to be cocooned in warmth forever with all her babyish features.
"Hi," she greeted softly, wearing a soft and almost consoling smile on her lips.
"Hi," I muttered back, still a little bit weary, even more weary that she was holding something in a disposable.
"I'm sorry that happened, that was Alvin Owen, a... You can call him the Devil's Incarnate, everybody knows not to cross paths with him because he would make their lives a living hell. Let's just say he gets his happiness from making people's lives a living hell."
Really? Was this some kind of joke?
"And the teachers? They don't do anything about him?"
You just saw how he treated a staff!
"Oh come on," she wore a bemused smile, "he's Alvin Owen, Owen as in the five powerhouses in the country, no teacher would dare question what he's doing."
Owen. The family name rings a bell and that's because I knew them, everybody in Veeralh has to know that name. The whole of Veeralh Dynasty was ruled by the Supreme Council and that Council was made up of the five richest and strongest werewolf families.
And Owen just has to be one of them.
"So you just have to steer clear of Alvin, publicly apologize if you can, and really pray he'd find someone new to play with because if he decides to make you his plaything, there's no way you'd survive here," the girl said, sounding so sincere and genuinely worried for me as if this could possibly be more than high school drama.
As if it was a life-and-death situation.
"Oh, my bad, I'm Amelia and you're?" She peered at my name tag before I could answer, "Lustre Bell. That's a really beautiful name."
"Thank you," I said slowly, still unsure of her and where all these could be leading to.
"Oh, I brought you a change of clothes," she stretched the disposable bag to me, "They're mine and they might not really fit since our body shapes are different but they'd be better than nothing, right?"
She was smiling reassuring as she spoke but I still couldn't believe her.
"But why?"
"Why what?"
"You just told me Alvin or whatever his name is is a deranged person so if you're helping me when he puts me in this position, won't you be at a disadvantage?"
"Oh, don't worry about that, and by the, I could use a friend and I'm sure you need a friend too."
"Yeah, you're right about that," I collected the clothes from her and while I was changing, she helped me wash and dry mine and I felt, maybe, just maybe schooling here wouldn't be so bad after all.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
