Chapter 12A chilly breeze kicked up around them as Ruth and Samuel made their way along the dirt footpath toward the top of Mount Caburn. When Samuel had suggested they go for a Sunday drive in the country, Ruth had been all for it. The children would be with Ezra all day, and any activity that took them away from town was a winner in her book. Of course, Samuel hadn’t happened to mention that there would be hiking involved. Ruth glanced down at her brown leather paddock boots. Not the worst choice she could have made—at least the heels were low—but after an hour or more of walking, she felt a blister beginning to form along the inside of her left foot. Not that she cared all that much. Their conversation had fallen into an easy rhythm as they climbed the 480-foot hill in the South Downs
