Chapter 19“Mummy!” all three children cried in unison as Ruth peeked her head into the room.
Nili, sitting on the end of Orly’s little twin bed, looked up, surprised. “Didn’t expect to see you home this early.”
“Me neither. Am I too late for a story?”
“Just finished, I’m afraid.” Nili pushed to her feet. “But I’m guessing no one here is going to argue against getting a tuck-in from Ima.” Nili paused on her way out, examining Ruth’s face with a concerned eye. Ruth shook her head slightly, trying to quell the sob moving up into her throat.
After Nili moved into the hallway, Ruth kicked off her heels.
“So, my little shnoyms,” she said, taking up the warm spot Nili had left behind on Orly’s bed. “How was your evening?”
Orly clapped her hands together. “We made macawoons.”
“Did you now?”
