Chapter 29Ruth gazed wearily out the back window of the cab as it motored down the A40 toward St. John’s Wood. As she counted car after car whizzing by in the overtaking lane, she grew frustrated and leaned forward in the seat. “I hate to be a bother,” she said to the driver. “But is there any way you could speed things up a bit? It’s very late, and I’ve had a long couple of days.” The driver gave a nod, stepped on the accelerator, and moved out from behind the lorry they’d been following since the interchange at the M25. Ruth leaned back in the seat with a sigh. Although originally scheduled to fly out with Samuel on Sunday afternoon, she had managed, with some persistence, to book a seven o’clock flight back to London Saturday night.
