Chapter 17The answering machine clicked off. Ruth stood, head down, hands planted on the desk. “Damn.” Eleven messages and not one of them from Rabbi Kalman. Their plane had touched down at Heathrow just before noon, and she and Samuel had shared a cab back up to Westminster. After bidding him goodbye with a quick kiss and a promise to call Saturday night after Havdalah, Ruth had slipped quietly into the flat and made a beeline to her office.
