THE PORTRAIT It was in early spring when I received the letter from Brathwaite and Hewson Esq, Solicitors, concerning their client, my distant cousin, Felicia Winthrop. In truth, we had never been a close family and I had not seen my cousin since my parent’s funeral some ten years earlier, so I was somewhat intrigued to receive the said communication, requesting that I contact them as a matter of urgency. I wrote back immediately, and within a few days, received their reply, which stated that my cousin had not been seen in the village in over a month, and that the local squire had launched an investigation into her disappearance, and as part of that investigation, Messrs Brathwaite and Hewson were making enquiries as to whether I had any knowledge of my cousin’s whereabouts.
