If eyes could kill, Freda would have me living under the ground already. The way she glared at me with no ounce of love as past friends could tell that she was never my friend and I was the one always fooling myself around her.
She shifted her gaze to Vito, who was concentrating so much on his cell phone and then scoffed, clapping her hands together. “Is this it?” she asked, eyes on me.
I didn't understand how I had to meet the two people I got out of my life on my first night of clubbing. That could tell that both idiots had a thing for a long time, and I just found out a few days ago. Were they here together, or had they broken up since I revealed Dante's ass to her?
“You always claimed not to like bikers, and here you are, drinking with a biker, in the biker night party. Should I say you were the problem? I can also add that you never loved Dante anymore and were just seeking a way to kick him out of your life so you could focus on your biker boyfriend, because you're not the only woman who is the breadwinner of the family.”
“Lia, you should be ashamed of yourself. The lies and everything are so annoying, and I don't want to imagine how long this dude must have f****d you, and you were acting as if you had never cheated on your husband,” she blurted, her hands moving from one corner to another, and she rolled her eyes countless times at me.
I cleared my throat and sipped from my wine.
Vito was no longer interested in his cell phone and was staring at Freda.
One thing went through my mind; if he was getting attracted to her too, then he could go ahead and bag her already instead of staring for so long.
“Now look how neat you're dressed, even though the outfit isn't completely feminine. And you made out time to be here. Yet you never gave Dante any of these, to show that you were never attracted to him. I bet you were trying to manipulate him because you were the breadwinner of the home…and also you could be on pills so you don't carry his child. Quote me wrong, Lia!!” she added, even betting on me.
I sniffed hard and asked her, “If Dante is such a good man, why are you not married to him yet?”
She raised her eyelashes and our gaze locked.
“Our divorce would be finalised quicker than you think, so please be patient and bag him immediately everything is completed. You could even start having kids for him now until then…it's not gonna take so much time. Just three months and it will be finalised." I started, grabbed my glass of wine and fixed it to my lips.
She stared, her lips dropped open in shock. And just when she was about to retort at me, her eyes growing wide, Vito picked it up from there.
“You don't talk down on my woman before me,” he said, his voice commanding enough to scare anyone away. I didn't want to get bothered by all that, but he kept repeating it, and it would be okay if I addressed it quickly. “If you don't want to go on your knees and apologise, then quickly leave without saying a thing.”
Freda's face turned red. She gnashed her teeth, backed out immediately and entered the crowd without even glancing back at me.
I sipped once again from the glass, and the content finished, so I tapped Vito to draw his attention, “I hope you don't get sad or confused by what I wanna address.”
He shrugged and dropped his cell phone.
“Thank you for taking my side each time, but I just hope that you referring to me as your lady is a camouflage, because I ain't doing anything love with a man. I just got divorced and ain't getting into any relationship with a man…not now, not ever.” I nibbled my lower lip and exhaled lightly.
I just hoped this doesn't hurt him, but it was okay that I clarify myself before he takes things to another level.
“You don't mention me as yours again, so people don't start looking out for us as a couple, when I'm not interested at all. I only came here because you invited me; no other reason attached.”
He grabbed his glass, downed the contents, and then nodded to me. I saw the sweat forming on his forehead, but I only hoped it had nothing to do with what I had just said.
“It's okay; I didn't mean that you're my girlfriend, I only smelled what was going on and followed up. By the way, why did you divorce your husband?” he asked lastly, and I faked up a smile as usual. “How many years in marriage? I sense it's being too hard for you to heal.”
I chuckled, “It's just two days since we divorced, so I wouldn't heal in a blink of an eye after four years of knowing him. We married two years after dating, and he cheated with my ex-friend who just left here.”
“The guts to still come back, throwing all those to you… Why are you so calm? A slap could have reset her brain. You are a fighter, so not like she would win over you.” he gestured, sounding so pissed.
I took a deep breath first, then said to him, “It's okay for her to rant. Laying my hand on them could lead to death, because I will transfer every ounce of my pain, anger and aggression to them…especially Freda, whom I thought was my best friend.”
“Best friend my foot! This is why I don't keep friends except my biker brothers, because we have rules here that keep the relationship going.” He let out a hiss and poured the remaining contents in the bottle into his glass, while I just stared at his face.
No one has ever picked up my problem and got worked up to it like this, so I was shocked.
“What about you? It doesn't look like you have a girlfriend.” I broke the silence beginning to grow between us.
He nodded, “She cheated, so I'm not planning to date again. I'll just hire a surrogate or adopt a kid when I'm ready for that.”
A knot twisted in my gut. I wasn't sure which was getting at me. Was it that he was cheated on, or that he doesn't look like he was ready for a woman?
It wasn't supposed to bother me since I had just warned him not to push ahead…but a part of me wished he would change his mind, and the other still stuck at my decision of not giving love any more chances.
Whatever!
Neither of us was interested in love anymore, so that made it better.
