REALITY

528 Words
Morning crept in quietly, slipping through the thin apartment curtains in pale gold streaks. Olivia stirred first, her lashes fluttering before her eyes slowly opened. For a moment, everything was still. The warmth of the sheets, the soft rhythm of Noah’s breathing beside her—it felt like a dream. A stolen moment suspended in time. Then reality crashed back in. She blinked and sat up slightly, the sheet slipping down to her waist. Her heart pounded—not from desire this time, but from the weight of consequence. Her gaze dropped to Noah, who was still asleep, his expression softer than she’d ever seen it. Vulnerable. Peaceful. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Last night had been a blur of tension finally snapping, of whispered confessions and sparks they could no longer deny. They’d crossed a line—no, they’d obliterated it. And now, in the sobering light of day, Olivia couldn’t ignore the truth: nothing between them would ever be the same. Noah stirred then, his eyes opening slowly. He looked at her, and for a split second, there was something like contentment. Then his brow furrowed. “Morning,” he said, his voice hoarse. Olivia nodded, pulling the sheet tighter around herself. “Yeah. Morning.” Silence settled like a fog. Noah sat up, rubbing the back of his neck. “So… that happened.” “Yeah,” Olivia echoed. “It did.” She climbed out of bed and reached for her clothes, her movements stiff. The room suddenly felt too quiet, too intimate. She couldn’t look at him. Not yet. “I guess we should talk about it,” he said, his voice careful. Olivia turned, one hand on her zipper. “What is there to talk about? It happened. It was a mistake. We go back to pretending we hate each other, right?” Noah flinched, just barely. “Is that really what you want?” She hesitated. Her chest tightened. Did she? No. But wanting him didn’t erase everything they’d been. The arguments. The rivalry. The history. “It’s what's easiest,” she whispered. He stood then, walking toward her. “I don’t do easy. Neither do you.” Their eyes locked, and for a heartbeat, it felt like last night was still echoing between them. But the truth stood between them, louder than desire. They weren’t just lovers now. They were something messy, something complicated. Something real. And reality? Reality didn’t wait for you to figure it out. Olivia looked away, forcing a breath. “We should go. We don’t want to be late for school.” Noah didn’t argue. He just nodded. As they dressed in silence, the distance between them grew—filled with everything unsaid. But as Olivia reached for the door, Noah’s voice stopped her. “This doesn’t have to be the end of whatever this is.” She paused, her hand on the doorknob. “No,” she said softly, not turning around. “But it might be the beginning of something we’re not ready for.” And with that, she stepped out—leaving behind the warmth of the night, and walking straight into reality.
