Chapter 2 Sophie Edwards groaned when she got a good look at the sharp curve in the blacktop road ahead, which she would have sworn turned more than 180 degrees as it headed up the heavily forested mountain. In the back of her mind, she knew that was only an illusion because the blasted roadbed climbed a good twenty feet in that curve. But she would still like to have a long, possibly loud conversation with whoever thought cutting a road through here was any kind of sensible idea. Clearly someone who’d never driven a massive diesel truck hauling a tree crane on a trailer with a load of tools along behind it.
